It was an absolute pleasure playing with Ustad Rafique Khan on sitar and my little brother Sarfaraaz Khan on sarangi. A trio of strings and rhythm.

About Instrumental Recitals & Jugalbandi
Instrumental recitals in a baithak setting are entirely different from stage performances. When I play with a sarangi or sitar player, the focus shifts to the jugalbandi, where the instruments trade phrases in a conversation. You can hear every subtle pluck of a string and the resonance of the tabla skin without any amplification needed, creating a rare level of intimacy that larger venues cannot provide.
Hindustani classical music is best experienced when the distance between the artist and the audience is minimal. My approach to instrumental recitals focuses on preserving this intimacy. Whether it is a sitar recital by someone like Ustad Rafique Khan or a sarangi session with Sarfaraaz Khan, these performances are designed to let the audience sit close enough to see the precision of the fingering and feel the vibrations of the strings.
These gatherings rely on the chemistry between musicians. Jugalbandi is not just a performance, it is a dialogue. My role as the tabla player is to provide the rhythmic heartbeat, responding to the melodic lead of the sitar, sarod, or sarangi. We do not use loud sound systems here. Instead, we rely on natural acoustics to ensure the pure tone of the instruments reaches you clearly.
If you are hosting a small gathering in Bangalore, I can arrange an ensemble that fits your space, whether it is a living room, a garden, or a small hall. I work with trusted artists from my circle in Delhi and Kolkata to bring you authentic classical music that feels like a shared experience rather than a formal show. If you have questions about the logistics of setting up floor cushions for your guests or the kind of repertoire that works best for your space, send me a message.
