Music is meant to be shared, not just performed. These gatherings are about breaking the wall between artist and listener, with warm chai and honest conversation in a space that feels like home.

The stage is set for an evening of Hindustani classical music. The mattresses on the floor invite you to sit comfortably and get lost in the sound, creating a truly traditional baithak feel.

A view from the audience, where everyone is capturing the moment. It shows how personal and engaging these sessions are, with people feeling close enough to the artists to record their favorite parts.

This video captures the essence of our baithak series. From the pouring of chai to the artists on stage and the audience recording, it’s a snapshot of the community and culture we celebrate.

An evening of timeless ghazals is made even better with a cup of hot chai. This simple pleasure is a core part of the warm and welcoming atmosphere at our baithak gatherings.

An audience member completely absorbed in the soulful poetry of ghazals. These are the moments of pure connection that make curating these events so fulfilling.

A guest holds the program for an evening of ghazals. It’s these little details that make the experience special, setting the tone for a night of beautiful music.

This video shows how our baithaks dissolve boundaries. It’s as much about the audience as it is about the artists, creating a shared space for patronage and cultural connection.

About The Baithak Atmosphere

For these gatherings to work, I coordinate the layout myself—placing floor mattresses and cushions so there is no formal front row. It changes how people listen; when you are sitting on the floor with a cup of chai in hand, the barrier between you and the artist disappears. It turns a standard performance into a shared, two-way experience.

A Return to Traditional Listening

There is a difference between hearing music and feeling it. In my experience playing the tabla for nearly three decades, the most profound moments happen when the audience is close enough to see the artist’s expressions. That is the essence of a traditional baithak.

How We Create the Atmosphere

  • No Stiff Stages: We remove the separation of a high stage. My goal is to curate an environment where everyone sits together, creating a relaxed, informal energy.
  • Pure Acoustics: These sessions are designed for intimate settings, whether it is your living room or a garden. We rely on the raw sound of the instruments—tabla, harmonium, or sarangi—which thrives in smaller rooms under 500 sq ft.
  • Conversational Context: I personally act as the narrator for the evening. Between the performances, I share anecdotes about the music, the Ragas, or the poetry, ensuring that even those new to Hindustani classical music feel included.

Types of Gatherings

Whether you are looking for a soul-stirring Ghazal evening, a tribute to legends like Jagjit Singh, or a classic Thumri session, the structure remains the same: an unhurried, cozy experience. I bring in musicians from across the country—vocalists and instrumentalists I have known for years—to ensure the chemistry on stage is genuine.

Everything is handled with care, from the 45-minute sound check to ensure the acoustics match your space, to the traditional attire we wear to honor the music. If you want to move away from loud, public concerts and bring a piece of cultural history into your home, this is how we do it.
