About Ghazal & Thumri Performances
When we set up a baithak, I prioritize a layout that removes the barrier between the audience and the musicians. We typically avoid standard PA systems, opting instead for a balanced, acoustic setup that lets the vocalist’s voice carry naturally. This ensures you catch every subtlety in the poetry and the gentle resonance of the instruments, exactly as it was intended to be heard.
For me, a performance is about the bond we create in the room. I curate these gatherings to mimic the traditional, informal settings of Indian music, where a performer and an audience could simply look at each other and share a moment of understanding.
My approach to these events is structured around that intimacy. Whether I am bringing in a talented vocalist from Delhi or Kolkata, or performing a set myself, we focus on the repertoire of Thumri, Dadra, and Ghazal—genres that thrive in close-up environments. I usually design the performance as a 90 to 100-minute session, which allows enough space for the music to develop and for us to chat about the history or meaning behind the pieces.
Because I work with artists I know personally—my own 'bhai log'—the chemistry on stage is real. We don't just go through a pre-decided setlist. We listen to the room. If the energy calls for a soulful Ghazal or a lighter Thumri, we adapt. We handle the logistics of sound and lighting, but the true essence lies in the simplicity: the floor cushions, the tea, and the connection. If you are hosting a private soirée or a public series, I handle the artistic curation, from selecting the right vocalist who matches your vision to ensuring the acoustic flow is perfect for your space.
