About Makam Residence: Minimalist Indian Contemporary

The main challenge with this project was proving that a limited budget does not mean sacrificing character or quality. By prioritizing smart material placement—using fluted wood textures for visual depth and brass hardware for an authentic Indian touch—we created a home that feels warm and premium, all while remaining extremely easy to clean and maintain.

This view of the living room highlights the custom ceiling design with integrated cove lighting, which provides a soft, ambient glow. The layout is planned for conversation, with comfortable seating and large windows framed by simple curtains to maximize natural light.5

The traditional wooden 'jula', or swing, is a centerpiece in this home, set against a warm exposed brick wall. It’s a nostalgic element that invites relaxation and conversation.7

The centerpiece of the dining area is this custom-made world map, a direct nod to the clients' passion for travel. It's not just decor; it's a conversation starter and a daily reminder of their adventures.16
We used a geometric wooden screen to create a subtle partition between spaces, allowing light and views to pass through. The traditional indoor swing, or 'jhoola', adds a playful and classic South Indian touch to the modern living area.
The living room is designed for comfort, with plush sofas and a neutral color scheme. We used a textured wooden ceiling panel and wood-paneled partitions to add warmth and define the open-plan layout.
In the master bedroom, we combined a tall, upholstered headboard with rustic wood-paneled walls. This mix of soft and hard textures creates a cozy, cocoon-like feeling, perfect for a restful retreat.

This living room from the 'Ittige' project is a perfect example of our integrated approach. The space flows seamlessly, furnished with a mix of contemporary sofas, a traditional swing, and artful partitions that define areas without closing them off.31

This dining area pays homage to the client's heritage with traditional wooden columns and a 'katte' bench. A discreet puja unit is hidden behind CNC jali doors, seamlessly integrating spirituality into the design.9
Opposite the dining area, a wall features a traditional peacock wallpaper, creating a beautiful focal point. A small console table holds a Krishna idol, blending spiritual elements with modern decor.
The foyer of the 'Kanasu' home sets a nostalgic tone with frames showing life in Mangalore. A vintage-style cabinet with antique handles embodies the harmony of old-world charm and contemporary functionality.
To provide privacy for the open kitchen, I designed this beautiful arched door with stained glass panels. It adds to the home's traditional aesthetic while allowing light to pass through.

I love creating partitions that define a space without closing it off. Here, a wooden arch with colorful Channapatna pillars separates the living area, adding an element of traditional craft. The design allows for a clear view of the custom Kalamkari art, blending art and architecture seamlessly.
The color palette for this living room was all about celebrating minimalism with warm, earthy tones from the traditional Indian palette. The custom-painted Kalamkari art, leather sofa, and 'velaku' inspired side table come together to create a cozy, sophisticated space.
The private foyer of the 'Brihati' home welcomes you with the warmth of brick, oxide walls, and vintage-inspired furniture. I took the traditional 'kolam' and gave it an unconventional twist by mounting a larger-than-life version on the ceiling, creating an immediate sense of arrival.
