Functional Strength & Conditioning
We build functional strength for life, not just for the mirror. Our sessions integrate traditional martial arts drills with modern conditioning to ensure you move, recover, and perform better.
A closer look at our makiwara conditioning. This practice is not just about hitting a target; it is a discipline for forging what we call an "iron fist." It develops focus, proper technique, and the physical toughness required in martial arts.
Warmups are crucial for preparing the body for intense work. Here, our members engage in a dynamic group exercise that serves as a great alternative to static drills, getting the blood flowing and building camaraderie right from the start.
Every class is a guided experience. Here, a group of members listens intently during a session, focusing on proper form and technique. We ensure everyone, regardless of their level, understands the mechanics of each movement.
About Functional Strength & Conditioning
We train on high-density EVA Tatami mats to protect your joints during explosive drills. You won't find mindless repetition here; our programming balances high-intensity functional movements with dedicated mobility blocks, so you leave the gym feeling capable and recovered, not just drained.
Training with Intent
At The Dojo, fitness is a pillar of our martial arts practice. We don't believe in random workouts or chasing exhaustion for its own sake. Whether you are here for sport-specific power, injury rehabilitation, or general longevity, our conditioning sessions are structured to build a capable body.
The Method
Our programming, led by Coach Tinsley, moves through three distinct phases:
- Mobility & Warm-up: We start with dynamic movements, including Animal Flow, to prep the joints and prime the nervous system.
- Functional Strength: We utilize a mix of martial arts-inspired drills—such as makiwara work for the hands and specific core-strengthening variations—alongside modern functional exercises. This builds real-world power that translates to both the mat and daily life.
- Recovery: We end every session with dedicated stretches and deep breathing. You need to be able to show up tomorrow, so recovery is never an afterthought here.
Why Train With Us?
This is a barefoot environment. From the moment you bow onto the Tatami mats, the focus is on form and discipline. Because we train in small groups, you get consistent feedback on your movement patterns. If you are struggling with a specific lift or kinetic chain, we address it immediately. Our goal is to forge warriors for life, and that requires a body that is as resilient as it is strong. If you are looking for a space that takes your physical development as seriously as you do, you will fit right in.
