Yoga for Every Body: Prop-Supported Classes
Think yoga isn't for you because you aren't flexible? Think again. At Svādhyāya, we believe props aren't crutches; they are keys to unlocking a safer, deeper, and more mindful practice. Come find your ease with us in Powai.
Using blocks and bolsters to support the body in Hanumanasana (the splits). This shows how we can work towards deep poses with patience and support.
This is what deep, supported rest looks like. Using bolsters in Supta Baddha Konasana (Reclined Bound Angle Pose) allows the body to completely surrender.
The wall is one of our best props. Here, it provides the stability needed to work on inversions like Sirsasana (Headstand) with confidence.
A student uses multiple bolsters to ease into a deep hip-opening stretch, allowing for a longer, more restorative hold.
A yoga block and strap are excellent tools for releasing tight hips and hamstrings, making poses like Lizard Pose more accessible.
Using blocks to support the hips in a seated twist. This modification helps maintain a tall spine and deepen the stretch safely.
Finding a gentle opening in the low lunge with the back knee supported by a block. Small adjustments like this make a big difference.
A student uses a block under the front foot to modify a lunge, helping to work on hip flexibility with proper alignment.
Working on hamstring flexibility with the help of a folded napkin under the heel. Simple props can be incredibly effective.
A student rests in a modified child's pose, showing how we adapt poses to suit each individual's needs.
About Yoga for Every Body: Using Props for Support
You might think using props means you aren't flexible enough, but in our shala, we see blocks, bolsters, and walls as essential tools for true growth. They give your body the exact feedback it needs to find proper alignment safely, allowing you to settle into a pose and breathe deeper rather than struggling against tension. Whether it’s using the wall for inversions or bolsters for restorative rest, these props help you meet your body where it is today.
Why We Use Props
Yoga isn't a performance. It is a dialogue with your own body. Often, we push ourselves into shapes that cause unnecessary strain, leading to stiffness instead of release. Using props like yoga blocks, straps, and bolsters allows us to change the geometry of a pose so it fits you, not the other way around.
How We Use Them in Class
- The Wall: We use the wall as a reliable partner. It provides tactile feedback, which is crucial for building confidence in inversions like Sirsasana (Headstand). It helps you find your center without the fear of falling, allowing you to build strength safely.
- Bolsters & Blocks: During Hatha or restorative flows, a bolster under your spine or blocks under your hips can turn a 'struggle' into a 'stretch'. By raising the floor to meet you, these props allow you to hold restorative poses longer, helping your nervous system shift from 'fight or flight' into a state of deep repair.
- Straps: When hamstrings feel tight, a strap acts as an extension of your arms. It allows you to maintain a tall, aligned spine while accessing the stretch, preventing the rounding of the back that often leads to lower back pain.
Making Yoga Sustainable
My goal is for you to be able to practice well into your later years. By embracing props, we cultivate a practice that is sustainable, gentle, and deeply effective. You will find that as your body warms and opens, you may need these tools less, or you may find new ways to use them to explore even deeper sensations. This is a journey of patience, not speed. Whether you are dealing with past injuries or just want to feel more at home in your skin, these props are here to support that process.
