We break down large institutional sites into interconnected pods, creating human-scaled environments where courtyards, light, and terracotta textures foster organic interaction.

An aerial render of The Atelier campus, showing how individual building pods are arranged around a central open space with unique canopy structures. This master plan breaks down a large institution into a more human-scaled, village-like environment.

A top-down view of the campus render, highlighting the circular canopies that create shaded gathering zones. Trees are integrated into the design, growing through openings in the canopies to merge landscape and architecture.

This render shows the roofscape of the learning pods, with cutouts that form light wells for internal courtyards. This design ensures that natural light penetrates deep into the buildings, creating bright and airy interior spaces.

The main entry pod of The Atelier, designed with a large, welcoming overhang and accessible ramps. The use of earthy, pigmented cement and brick creates a warm and grounded entrance that invites students and visitors inside.

A view from the central quadrangle towards one of the academic pods. The design emphasizes connections, with open walkways and transparent facades linking the interior spaces with the landscaped courts outside.

Covered walkways and streets connect the different pods of The Atelier. The use of perforated brick walls and lush planting along these paths creates a sensory journey through the campus, with changing patterns of light and texture.

About Campus & Institutional Planning

We believe an institution shouldn't feel like a sprawling, soulless block. Instead, we use a cluster-based planning approach, effectively de-scaling large sites into smaller, manageable pods connected by walkways and shared courtyards. This encourages a small village atmosphere where architecture doesn't just house activity—it actively shapes social interaction, with light-filled classrooms that flow directly into open green spaces.

When designing large-scale educational or corporate campuses, our primary challenge is maintaining a human scale. We avoid the monolithic approach of single-block buildings, instead utilizing a volumetric strategy that breaks the program into distinct, interconnected pods. This creates a porous campus where transition spaces—verandahs, covered walkways, and internal courtyards—become just as important as the classrooms or offices themselves.

Our process begins with rigorous site analysis, studying wind direction and sun paths to ensure every structure is climate-responsive. We use physical scale models to test how shadows fall across these clusters, ensuring the 'Komorebi' effect—dappled light—is captured in shared areas. We specify a restrained palette of honest, tactile materials: wire-cut brick, terracotta tiles, and pigmented cement. These materials weather gracefully and link the architecture to the local context. Whether designing an entry pavilion or a network of academic blocks, our aim is to foster organic social interaction, ensuring the site feels like a cohesive community rather than a collection of separate structures.
