Designing Around Nature: Architecture That Preserves Trees

We believe land should be celebrated, not cleared. Our process begins by listening to the site, preserving existing trees, and letting the landscape shape the home.

A key principle of our work is designing around existing nature. At Gulmohar Farmhouse, a mature palm tree grows directly through a cutout in the security guard's cabin roof, a clear example of how we adapt our architecture to the site.

A view from below shows how the roof of the guard cabin at Gulmohar Farmhouse was carefully constructed around the trunk of a tall palm tree. This detail demonstrates our commitment to preserving the natural character of a site.

At the entrance of Gulmohar Farmhouse, another existing palm tree stands in a planter bed integrated into the paved driveway. Instead of removing it, we made it a central feature of the arrival experience.

The driveway at Gulmohar Farmhouse was designed to accommodate several mature palm trees. By paving around them, we preserved the site's established greenery and created a grand, tree-lined entrance.

This before and after sequence highlights how an existing tree was carefully preserved during the construction of this modern home. The final result shows the house and garden living in harmony, with the mature tree providing character and shade.

About this collection

At our Gulmohar Farmhouse project, we faced a choice: clear the land for a standard guard cabin or adapt the structure to fit the environment. We chose the latter, cutting the cabin roof around the trunk of a mature palm tree. This detail represents our baseline approach to every site we take on. Instead of imposing a rigid blueprint, we measure, map, and design around what already exists, ensuring that the history and shade of your plot are part of your new home from day one.

Architecture That Respects the Land

True luxury in architecture is not just about the footprint of the house. It is about how that house coexists with the ground it stands on. When we start a project, our first step is never the drafting table. It is the site analysis. We walk the land to understand sun paths, drainage patterns, and the location of every mature tree.

The Challenge of Preservation

Preserving trees during construction is a complex technical challenge. It requires careful planning of foundations to avoid damaging root systems and precise waterproofing where a tree meets a built structure. Whether we are building a farmhouse in the NCR or a villa in the city, we view these constraints as opportunities rather than obstacles.

Why Design Around Nature?

  • Immediate Character: A home built around a 20-year-old tree feels lived-in and established immediately upon completion.
  • Natural Climate Control: Existing trees provide natural shade and cooling, reducing the energy load required to keep your interiors comfortable.
  • Visual Connection: When windows are positioned to frame existing trees, the garden becomes an extension of your living room, creating that seamless indoor-outdoor flow we are known for.

We believe that a house is not a separate entity from its environment. It is a dialogue. If you have a site with existing natural features you are hesitant to lose, we would love to discuss how to weave your architecture around them.
