Carnatic Vocal and Classical Dance Collaborations
Music is a shared journey, and I love blending my Carnatic vocals with the grace of Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi to bring stories to life, whether on a grand stage or in a quiet, impromptu setting.
An impromptu music and dance session with a friend, exploring a favorite part of the song 'Chinnanjiru Kiliye'. These spontaneous moments of abhinaya and song are where so much joy and creativity are found.
During a Navaratri visit, the beautiful Golu display inspired me to sing 'Maayamma'. My friend Eeshaan Koundinya was so moved that he joined in with abhinaya, creating a moment of pure, unplanned devotional art.
A humble offering for Ganesh Chaturthi with my friend Eeshaan Koundinya. We blended music and dance in this impromptu take on 'Taruṇam Idaiyyā' right in front of a temple, showing how art can be an offering anywhere, anytime.
A tribute to the great composer Thyagaraja Swami, performed with a dancer in front of a temple gopuram. This was a casual, heartfelt offering of his magnum opus 'Endaro Mahanubhavulu', blending voice and movement to honor a legend.
A collaborative offering for Ramanavami, blending my singing with Bharatanatyam. We wanted to convey the meaning of the lyrics, that meditating on Rama's name makes all troubles disappear, through both music and dance.
Sharing a moment with the esteemed Padma Shri Dr. Narthaki Nataraj, for whom I had the honor of providing vocal support during a dance recital. Working with such legendary artists is always a deeply enriching experience.
A collage from the Cleveland Thyagaraja Festival, where I had the opportunity to sing for a 'Maargam' dance recital and lead the Carnatic Symphony. These collaborations are incredible learning opportunities for me as a musician.
About Collaborations in Music & Dance
When I collaborate with dancers, it is not just about matching the beat. It is about sync—I need to know exactly how the dancer breathes and moves so my swarams [musical notes] land perfectly. Whether it is a formal stage recital or a spontaneous temple performance, I always coordinate my vocal range with their footwork rhythm to ensure the story feels seamless for the audience.
Music and dance are two sides of the same coin. In our tradition, they are not just meant to exist side-by-side; they are supposed to feed off each other. When I sing for a Bharatanatyam or Kuchipudi recital, I am watching the dancer’s abhinaya [expressive acting] as closely as I am watching the tala [rhythm].
The goal is to create a singular experience. If we are performing a padam or a javali, the emotional weight lies in how the lyrics are interpreted through movement. My job as the vocalist is to lift that interpretation with the right raga and bhava [emotion].
I have performed everywhere from the grand stages of the Cleveland Thyagaraja Festival to intimate temple steps. Each space demands a different kind of energy. A temple setting is raw and requires a connection that feels almost like a private conversation with the divine. A large auditorium with lighting and a full ensemble needs a sharper, more projected vocal presence to carry the narrative across to the back row.
I am always open to new collaborative formats. Whether you are planning a traditional Arangetram, a thematic music-dance production, or a fusion piece that needs that classical touch, I bring a flexibility that comes from years of learning under my gurus. It is about that shared journey, and I am ready to craft something special with you.
Spoorthi Rao
I am Spoorthi, and I see music as an infinite journey. I grew up with the classical kutcheri vibe, but I love breaking out of the box to collaborate with dancers and storytellers who share that same devotion. It is a blessing to create something that lets the audience really feel the music.
