Designing Distinctive Living and Dining Spaces
These areas are more than furniture arrangements; they are the social pulse of a home. I focus on creating fluid, light-filled spaces that balance grand entertaining with intimate family connections.
The living room of the Screen House was designed with an emphasis on openness and connectivity. The front screens cast dynamic patterns of light and shadow, transforming the space into a living artwork throughout the day.
The front elevation of the Screen House is designed to flood the interiors with natural light. Strategically positioned screens provide privacy while allowing seamless ventilation, achieving a perfect balance of openness and comfort in this living area.
Sunlight filters through the intricate design of the front elevation screens in the Screen House, casting dynamic patterns on the living room floor and walls. As the day unfolds, these shifting shadows animate the space.
The first-floor living room of the Gupta Residence is a modern, inviting space with contemporary seating and wooden flooring. Large windows fill the room with natural light, while backlit shelving and framed photographs add personal character.
This double-height living room at Gupta Residence is defined by mustard-yellow seating and a bold patterned feature wall. The blend of art, light, and color creates a stylish yet welcoming ambiance.
The first-floor lounge at Gupta Residence is centered around a tranquil water feature with a Buddha statue and vertical garden. A floating wooden staircase adds architectural drama, while vibrant artwork brings sophistication and warmth.
The dining room at Gupta Residence features a large window framing lush greenery, infusing the space with freshness. The ceiling with wooden accents and a modern pendant light adds a touch of elegance.
About this collection
In my practice, the living area is never a static arrangement of furniture. I focus intently on how natural light moves across the floor throughout the day. By utilizing strategic openings, geometric screens, or double-height volumes, I ensure that the mood of your home shifts—from bright and invigorating in the morning to soft and introspective by evening.
The living and dining zones serve as the social heart of any residence. My approach is to treat these volumes as extensions of the family narrative, where the architecture facilitates interaction rather than constraining it.
The Architecture of Conversation
I often implement open-plan layouts that connect living rooms to dining areas and outdoor gardens. This promotes a fluidity of movement. Whether it is a double-height lounge in a farmhouse or a compact urban apartment, the goal is to eliminate barriers. I use sculptural staircases and central water features to anchor these spaces, creating focal points that invite gathering.
Materiality as Narrative
I believe that the tactile quality of a room is as important as its visual impact. I favor the interplay of natural textures—warm wood against exposed concrete, or the coolness of Italian marble paired with soft leather upholstery. For the dining area, I emphasize the relationship between the furniture and the architecture. A glass-top table or a custom-designed chair is positioned to respect the site lines, ensuring that your view of the garden or the terrace remains uninterrupted.
The Role of Art
A room feels incomplete without the presence of art. I do not view art as an afterthought. Instead, I integrate murals, sculptures, and feature walls into the initial design phase. By collaborating with local artists, we ensure that your living space feels like a personal collection rather than a showroom. Every element, from the lighting fixtures to the textured finish on a feature wall, is designed to enhance the sense of warmth and belonging.
Kapil Krishan Aggarwal
I approach residential architecture as a spatial story. When I design your living or dining area, I am looking for that precise intersection between your daily rituals and the architectural volume, ensuring the space feels both monumental and deeply personal.
