Heritage Restoration: Reviving Architectural Legacies

Every derelict structure holds a narrative waiting to be revived. My practice centers on the delicate balance of preserving architectural heritage while adapting spaces for contemporary relevance, as illustrated in these transformations.

The heart of the haveli, the central courtyard, was transformed from a neglected space into a grand, visually integrated hub. The 'before' shows decay, while the 'after' reveals a meticulously planned space that connects every floor.

This sequence illustrates the complete restoration process, from initial architectural elevations to the final, fully realized structure. It shows how we brought the 200-year-old Haveli Dharampura back from a state of near collapse.

The haveli's facade on a narrow lane in Chandni Chowk, before and after restoration. We cleared away the clutter of overhead wires and restored the intricate Dholpur stone carvings of elephants, flowers, and vines.

A comparison of the central courtyard, showing its evolution from a dilapidated area to a pristine space with a new water fountain and octagonal flooring, restoring its function as the haveli's core.

This video highlights the transformation of a guest suite. What was once a poorly partitioned and decaying space is now a luxurious room with a courtyard view, blending Mughal charm with modern amenities.

A look at the interior restoration. A crumbling, discolored room is reborn as an elegant guest suite, complete with custom furniture, a restored arched entryway, and thoughtful lighting design.

This series of before-and-after shots showcases various restored spaces within Haveli Dharampura. From staircases to corridors and rooms, each element was carefully reconstructed to honor its original design.

About this collection

Restoration requires detective work, not just construction. When we undertake projects like Haveli Dharampura, we initiate the process with a meticulous survey, as there are rarely any surviving blueprints. We map every structural crack and distress point, employing techniques such as epoxy grouting and micro-concreting to stabilize foundations before a single aesthetic design decision is finalized.

True heritage conservation is a dialogue with the past. It involves a systematic deconstruction of the layers of decay to uncover the building's original intent. In our work across Shahjahanabad, we do not simply patch walls; we reinstate the structural integrity of the edifice. This involves sourcing artisans from across North India who retain knowledge of traditional material applications, such as lime plaster recipes and the correct laying of Lakhori bricks.

Adaptive reuse is the core of our philosophy. We take structures that have fallen into obsolescence and reintroduce them to modern utility without erasing their historical essence. This is a complex engineering task. For instance, concealing modern HVAC systems and electrical conduits behind cornices or within restored vaulted ceilings is essential to maintaining the visual purity of the Mughal-era architecture while meeting modern comfort standards.

Each project, from the Golden Haveli to our ongoing efforts at Lahori Gate, is treated as a unique study. We conduct extensive research into the building's lineage, enabling us to replicate period-specific elements like stone Jaalis and Jharokhas with historical accuracy. This approach ensures that the finished space does not feel like a museum replica, but a living, breathing environment that honors its context while serving the needs of the present.

I view heritage buildings as the primary storytellers of our urban fabric. My team and I do not merely renovate; we engage in a deep dialogue with history, ensuring the soul of these structures remains intact while inviting modern life within their walls.
