Restoring an older property isn't about erasing its past; it’s about finding the right balance between its history and how you live today. In this Jhansi residence, I used a mix of traditional materials and contemporary design to create a space that feels rooted yet refreshed.

A wide view of the formal living area, where I balanced the dark, coffered teak ceiling with light grey sofas and an olive accent wall. The design creates a sophisticated space for conversation, grounded in traditional architectural elements.

This custom-built bar and display unit features whimsical, traditional Indian art. It acts as a vibrant focal point in the room, celebrating local craftsmanship within a modern, structured design.

A closer look at the details, where you can see the fusion of styles. A contemporary leather bench sits beside a traditional hand-painted screen, showing how I layer different eras and textures to create a unique, personal narrative.

Natural light was key in this space. The large windows and sheer curtains soften the formal setting, connecting the rich interiors with the green garden outside and creating a serene, airy atmosphere during the day.

This detail shot highlights the beautiful hand-painted folding screen, which tells a story and adds a layer of cultural depth. It's paired with a minimalist sofa to let the artwork truly stand out.

Here, the afternoon light catches the rich teak wood panelling and the unique art pieces in the bar cabinet. I designed this corner to be a cozy spot for evening relaxation, complete with a chess set and curated decor.

A direct look at the custom bar cabinet, which I designed to be both a functional storage unit and a piece of art. The playful cow motifs add a touch of personality and humor to the elegant space.

About this collection

Restoring a heritage home is rarely about just fresh paint; it is about respecting the original structure while fixing what time has worn down. In this Jhansi project, we had to carefully integrate modern electrical conduits and lighting systems into thick, load-bearing walls without compromising the original masonry. It is the kind of on-site problem-solving that keeps me up at night, but it ensures you get a home that feels authentic, not just renovated.

The Challenge of Time

When dealing with heritage architecture, the biggest enemy is usually moisture and structural fatigue. Before we talk about aesthetics, we look at the bones of the house. In this project, we reinforced the timber framework to support the new heavy-duty installations, ensuring the safety of the residence for years to come.

Material Integrity

I am obsessed with using materials that age well. For this home, we relied heavily on rich teak wood for panelling and joinery. Unlike modern laminates, teak reacts beautifully to natural light, developing a deeper patina over time. We paired this with traditional Indian art motifs—specifically the cow patterns seen in the cabinetry—to add character without making the space feel like a museum.

Designing for Light and Mood

Heritage homes often have smaller windows or heavy internal structures that block sunlight. By using sheer curtains and light grey furniture, I managed to open up the formal living area. We intentionally kept the ceiling dark and coffered to ground the space, while using warm, indirect lighting to soften the transition from day to night. It is about creating a mood—a sanctuary where the old walls feel comfortable in a new setting.

Why Process Matters

Nothing ever goes totally as planned on site, and that is okay. Whether it is a last-minute adjustment to the masonry or a change in the light placement, my team and I handle it on the ground. You will not find me sitting behind a desk while the work happens; I am at the site, ensuring the vision we discussed is exactly what gets built.
