Heritage Revival and Modern Interior Design in Old Delhi
We honor the architectural soul of heritage properties by blending traditional motifs like jharokhas and arched doorways with contemporary functionality.
A full view of the haveli's living area, showcasing the grand scale, traditional arched mirror above the fireplace, and built-in shelving for displaying artifacts, all unified by modern furnishings.
This view highlights the double-height space, with traditional jharokha-style balconies overlooking the main seating area. The design uses a mix of bold colors like red and blue to energize the space.
A cozy corner of the haveli, where a modern blue armchair with traditional jaali-patterned sides sits next to a classic fireplace and built-in wooden bookshelf.
The symmetrical design of the main wall, with the fireplace at its center flanked by illuminated bookshelves and arched doorways, creates a sense of classical balance and order.

About Heritage Revival & Fusion
Integrating a fireplace and modern shelving into a traditional haveli structure requires careful planning to respect the original layout while introducing modern utility. In our Suiwalan project, we maintained the existing proportions and jharokha balconies, layering them with custom brass detailing and cabinetry to ensure the space feels both historic and livable today.
Revitalizing a heritage property is not about erasing the past but finding a seamless connection between history and the present. When we undertake a project like the Suiwalan haveli, our priority is to identify the structural elements that give the building its identity, such as vaulted ceilings or exposed brickwork, and preserve them as the anchor for the entire design.
The Design Approach
Our process begins with a detailed assessment of the existing shell. We treat traditional architectural features, such as the arched doorways, as the focal points of the room. By introducing modern furniture with clean lines and a neutral palette, we allow the historic details to stand out without competing for attention.
We focus on these key areas:
- Material Compatibility: We pair traditional stone and wood with contemporary materials like glass and PVD-coated brass. This combination ensures that new additions feel complementary rather than disruptive.
- Light and Flow: Old structures often have complex room configurations. We analyze the light paths and open up circulation areas to ensure the space feels airy and spacious, rather than closed off.
- Modern Amenities: Incorporating electrical and HVAC systems into old walls requires precision. We conceal these services behind custom-built panelling and joinery, so the user experiences the luxury of modern technology without seeing the mechanical clutter.
When you approach a renovation for a classic home, you should be prepared to address structural integrity before moving to aesthetics. We conduct thorough site evaluations to ensure that any design modifications respect the load-bearing requirements of the original building. The result is a residence that acknowledges its history while providing a comfortable, efficient environment for modern living.
