Building an airport at 4,500 feet required more than design. It demanded a deep respect for the Himalayas and a mastery of complex geotechnical engineering.

An aerial perspective of the Pakyong Airport runway, showing its integration into the mountainous landscape of Sikkim. This project was a massive "cut and fill" operation, a true feat of geotechnical engineering designed to provide vital national connectivity.

This view showcases the terminal building and the 80-meter high geogrid-reinforced retaining wall, one of the tallest of its kind globally. The terraced slopes were later planted with local flora to ensure slope stabilization and environmental harmony.

A ground-level view from the runway, looking towards the terminal with the Himalayas in the background. This perspective captures the feeling of arrival and the successful integration of a major infrastructure project into a breathtaking natural setting.

The Pakyong Airport terminal at dusk. The design is simple and functional, built to withstand the region's weather while providing a clear, welcoming space for travelers. The lighting is designed to be efficient and non-intrusive to the surrounding environment.

About Monumental Infrastructure: The Pakyong Airport

The most complex part of this project was the earthwork, managing 65 lac cubic meters of material to level a ridge into a runway. We used a geogrid-reinforced retaining wall reaching 80 meters high to ensure stability against mountain landslides. If you are dealing with a challenging terrain or a large-scale infrastructure project, let's talk about the site's geology before we start drawing lines.

Let's find the right architectural solution.
