Academic Engagement and Architectural Mentorship
Architecture is a continuous dialogue. My practice extends beyond built forms into the classroom, where I engage in critical reviews, workshops, and lectures that shape the next generation of spatial thinking.
A student presents her work during a final design review at CEPT University. These reviews are intense, critical dialogues that push students to clarify their thinking and strengthen their architectural proposals.
In deep discussion with students and fellow faculty at SEED Kochi. These forums are invaluable for exchanging ideas and fostering a vibrant intellectual culture around architecture.
Leading a design charrette at CARE School of Architecture. These intensive workshops challenge students to think quickly and collaboratively, generating creative solutions for complex urban problems.
An invitation to give a "Tuesday Talk" at Sangath, the studio of B.V. Doshi. It was a privilege to return to this iconic space, where I had learned so much as a young architect, to share my own journey.
An announcement for a keynote speech. Sharing my experiences and philosophy with students is a responsibility I take seriously, as it contributes to the ongoing discourse of our profession.
A poster for a talk on the works of my practice. These presentations are an opportunity to reflect on our projects and share the "why" behind our design decisions.
Participating in "Design Par Charcha," an online discussion with Urban Sketchers Indore. The digital medium allows these important conversations about design to reach a wider audience.
A final review is a moment of collective learning. Here, I am listening to a student's presentation alongside other respected practitioners, offering feedback from multiple perspectives.
Examining a detailed site model with a student. Understanding the context of a project is the first step towards a sensitive and appropriate design response.
About Academic Engagement & Mentorship
In design reviews, I look for more than just technical proficiency. I focus on the clarity of a student's enquiry—how well they understand the context of their site and how rigorously they have questioned their own assumptions. It is a collaborative process where the dialogue between practitioner and student often reveals new perspectives for both.
A Practice of Enquiry
Teaching is not a departure from my daily work in the studio; it is an extension of it. When I engage with institutions like CEPT University or participate in forums at Sangath, I am not merely delivering a lecture. I am participating in a collective learning process. Architecture, to me, is a discipline that requires constant re-evaluation, and the questions posed by students during a design charrette often force me to articulate the 'why' behind my own design decisions.
The Design Review
I view the final review as a 'crit' culture—a space for intense, critical dialogue. My approach focuses on stripping away the superficial to reach the core of the project. We examine the socio-political context, the material logic, and the structural integrity. Whether working with students in Kochi or Ahmedabad, I push them to consider the responsibility we owe to the city. We move beyond the immediate design problem to address the broader implications of how a building touches the ground and how it interacts with the people who inhabit it.
Speaking and Workshops
I am regularly involved in:
- Design Reviews: Providing critical feedback on semester-long projects and thesis work.
- Workshops & Charrettes: Leading intensive, short-term sessions where we generate solutions for complex urban sites, from colonial precincts to old city markets.
- Keynote Lectures: Reflecting on the evolution of my practice, the importance of adaptive reuse, and the lessons learned from masters like B.V. Doshi.
These engagements are about fostering a vibrant intellectual culture. If you are an academic institution or an organization looking to host a discourse on architecture, I invite you to reach out to discuss potential collaborations.
