Intro to Ashtanga: Build Your Foundation
New to yoga? My beginner-friendly Ashtanga course breaks down the complex sequences into manageable steps, giving you a solid foundation without the intimidation.
This one-week foundational course is perfect for anyone new to Ashtanga or looking to solidify their practice. We start with the basics, like the alignment in Eka Pada Rajakapotasana (Pigeon Pose).
After the initial immersive weekend, you can continue your journey with complimentary Mysore-style classes. This is where you apply what you've learned in a self-paced, guided environment.
All the details for my Introduction to Ashtanga course. It includes weekend immersive sessions and a week of Mysore classes to integrate your learning. The goal is to build a confident, personal practice.
About Your Starting Point: Intro to Ashtanga
Most people think Ashtanga is just about fancy poses. In my intro course, we focus on the Tristana method, which involves breath, gaze, and locks. You do not need to be flexible to start. You just need to be willing to show up. We break down the Primary Series into manageable pieces so you understand exactly what your body is doing instead of just trying to mirror me.
Why This Course Works
Ashtanga is a disciplined practice, but the Mysore style is surprisingly flexible. You are not just following a group. You are learning a sequence that becomes your own. This course bridges the gap between 'I have no idea what I am doing' and 'I feel confident on my mat.'
The Course Structure
We keep it practical:
- Weekend Workshops: We spend two hours each Saturday and Sunday focusing on the fundamentals. You learn Ujjayi breathing mechanics and how to use locks to support your posture safely.
- Weekday Mysore: You join five consecutive morning sessions. This is not a lecture. You practice, and I move around the room to give you personal, hands-on adjustments. It is the fastest way to memorize the sequence and stop stressing about doing it right.
Is This For You?
If you are a beginner in Delhi or have been doing yoga but feel like you are just mimicking shapes, this is the reset you need. We use props like blocks and straps to make sure the posture fits your anatomy, not the other way around. My goal is to help you build a home practice you can actually stick to, even on the days you feel tired or stressed. You will walk away with a cheat sheet for the fundamental standing postures, making it easy to keep going once the course ends.

I am Sonakshi. I started The Shala because I wanted a space where burnout and perfectionism do not dictate your movement. My intro course is my way of stripping away the intimidation of Ashtanga so you can actually enjoy the process of showing up.
