Virali Villa: A Zen-Inspired Interior Design Project
A 1,675 sq. ft. residence in Mumbai designed for calm, composed living. We used a neutral ivory palette, ash grey veneers, and cane to craft a tranquil retreat for a family of five.

In the heart of the informal living room, a custom oak wood sofa and a floor-standing swing create a relaxed and stylish atmosphere. The design focuses on natural materials and comfort.
The formal living area features a custom-designed sofa, lounge chair, and center table from my 'Objects by Soch' collection. The space also incorporates a Jain mandir, respecting the client's beliefs with beautiful, integrated design.
The dining space is subtle yet impactful, with a bespoke marble-topped table and custom chairs upholstered in contrasting colors. The design is clean, elegant, and functional.
The kitchen embodies a Moroccan-Scandinavian theme with a color scheme of royal blue and ivory. The backsplash features vibrant Moroccan tiles, adding a pop of pattern and color.
The young couple's bedroom uses a palette of olive green and white with sharp lines for a look of subtle elegance. A compact study desk is integrated next to the bed for functionality.
The attached bathroom for the young couple's room continues the olive green theme with patterned tiles and a unique boat-shaped basin, creating a cohesive and stylish suite.
Designed for the elderly couple, this bedroom has a Zen approach with a calm, monochrome appearance. The headboard features a mix of cane and wood, set against a wall with a geometric stucco texture.
The teenager's room is painted with knotty pine veneer and pops of maroon and blue. The design is minimal yet playful, reflecting the personality of a 15-year-old.
A custom study table in the teenager's room uses veneer and colored glass in geometric patterns, creating an interesting and functional space for study and hobbies.
About The Virali Villa: A Study in Serene Living
What makes the Virali Villa work isn't just the aesthetic, but how the layout supports the daily habits of a family of five. For example, the floor-standing swing in the informal living room is positioned to facilitate a specific, relaxed way of lounging that feels rooted in Indian tradition while fitting seamlessly into a modern apartment layout.
Our approach to the Virali Villa was centered on the concept of 'serene living.' We moved away from heavy ornamentation, opting instead for a palette of ivory and ash grey, punctuated by the natural textures of cane and knotty pine. This creates a cohesive, Zen-inspired environment that feels open and breathable.
Materiality and Craft
We believe that residential interior design should be tactile. In the kitchen, we adopted a Moroccan-Scandinavian theme, using royal blue and ivory tones. The cabinetry and storage solutions are not just functional; they are crafted to minimize visual clutter. We incorporated fluted glass and PU-polished shutters to create a finish that is durable for a busy home while maintaining an elegant aesthetic.
Designing for Individuals
Every bedroom in this 1,675 sq. ft. apartment was tailored to the inhabitant:
- The Elderly Couple's Suite: We utilized a monochrome color scheme with stucco texture paint on the headboard wall to induce calmness.
- The Teenager's Room: We used knotty pine veneers combined with maroon and blue, featuring a custom study table with geometric glass inlays to support both study and hobbies.
- The Young Couple's Room: We brought in sharp lines and an olive green and white palette for a look of understated sophistication.
Respecting Tradition
Respecting the client's faith was a core part of our process. The Jain mandir was integrated into the living area, designed with ashthamangal patterns and custom lighting to ensure it sits naturally within the modern setting rather than feeling like an afterthought. Our work here showcases how custom furniture design, such as our pieces from the 'Objects by Soch' collection, can elevate a home into something truly unique.
