Authentic Pranayama & Cleansing Kriyas
Yoga is not just about the mat. True practice begins when you learn to control your breath and cleanse your system from within. Here is how I teach the ancient science of Pranayama and Shatkarmas.
In this video, I explain the correct way to practice Pranayama, quoting a Hatha Yogic text to emphasize the importance of proper technique for healing.
I share wisdom from the Upanishads on the power of breath, explaining why it must be tamed slowly and respectfully under the guidance of a guru.
Glimpses from our Shuddhikriya workshop, where students learn internal cleansing techniques like Nauli (abdominal churning) and Jalkram Kapalabhati.
Students practice Jalkram Kapalabhati, a nasal cleansing technique that is highly effective for sinus issues, allergies, and respiratory health.
About Deeper Dimensions: Breathwork & Cleansing Kriyas
Breathwork isn't just about breathing harder; if done incorrectly, it can spike your Vata dosha and lead to palpitations or headaches. In these sessions, we don't just perform pranayama—we learn the anatomy of breath, ensuring your practice creates calmness rather than stress. Whether it is Jalkram Kapalabhati for sinus relief or specific retention techniques, you learn the technique before the intensity.
The Science of Breath and Cleansing
Many students come to me having practiced basic breathing exercises, only to find they feel more anxious or tired. This happens because the breath is like a wild animal; it must be tamed slowly. My classes focus on the traditional approach described in the Upanishads and Hatha Yogic texts.
Why Shatkarma Matters
Before you can truly master Pranayama, your physical channels must be clear. We integrate Shatkarmas (cleansing techniques) to prepare the body.
- Jalkram Kapalabhati: This is essential for anyone living in Mumbai, where pollution and dust are constant factors. It helps clear the respiratory tract and sinus passages, providing natural relief from allergies.
- Nauli and Neti: These are not just physical movements; they are tools to clear internal stiffness and improve organ function.
Safety First
I often quote: ‘अयुक्त अभ्यास योगेन सर्व रोग समुद्भवम्’ (If you practice without the right technique, you invite disease). My approach at the Ghatkopar studio is strictly step-by-step. You will not find any rushed flows here. We use props to ensure your body is aligned before we even attempt advanced breath retention. If you have a history of respiratory issues, high blood pressure, or past injuries, please speak to me directly before starting. We will modify the practice to suit your current capacity, not your ego.
