Yogic Techniques for Mind & Breath: Kriya & Pranayama
Yoga is far more than physical postures. Discover how Kriya, Pranayama, and mindful breathwork can purify your body, calm the nervous system, and build the discipline needed for lasting health.
This video shows the practice of Kapalbhati, also known as the 'Shining Skull' breath. It is a powerful kriya, or cleansing technique, that serves as a foundation for Pranayama. The practice involves forceful exhalations to purify the blood, increase vital energy (prana), and clear the mind.
During intense asana practice, you will sweat. I teach my students to rub this sweat back into the skin, as it contains valuable minerals the body can reabsorb. This video explains the importance of deep breathing for energy and proper rehydration with natural drinks like coconut water or lemonade with jaggery, not processed sugar.
The transformation of a caterpillar into a butterfly is a powerful metaphor for our own journey. Through practice, we learn to live in the present and detach from temporary feelings of pain and pleasure. This mindset, a state of dispassion, is central to the yogic path and allows us to see the beauty in all life experiences.
My journey into yoga began with a deep questioning of our modern ways of living. Daily practice became my path to health and resolution. This commitment to all limbs of yoga, not just asana, is what I share with my students to help them live a more resolved and healthier life.
About Yogic Techniques for Mind & Breath
You do not need a gym to build mental fortitude. My approach to Kriya—like the Kapalbhati technique you see in these images—is not about just performing a movement. It is about purifying the blood and managing your energy flow. Before you reach out, understand that these techniques require consistency. If you are struggling with daily fatigue or scattered thoughts, start here, but be ready to commit to the daily practice, not just a weekend trial.
The Science of Breath (Pranayama)
Most people treat breathwork as a relaxation hack. In my practice, it is Prana-Yama—the control of life force. When we engage in deep breathing, we are not just calming the mind; we are oxygenating the blood and balancing the autonomic nervous system. My guidance is rooted in the traditional Ashtanga lineage. We do not rush. We observe, we breathe, and we refine.
Kriya: The Shining Skull
Kapalbhati, or the 'Shining Skull' technique you see in these images, is a foundational cleansing kriya. It is a powerful practice that uses forceful, rhythmic exhalations to clear the mind and increase vital energy. It is not something you do haphazardly. I teach this with strict attention to posture and frequency to ensure you are not straining the body, but rather preparing it for deeper meditation.
Why Practice is Essential
I see many people in Dwarka and across Delhi NCR looking for quick fixes for stress or digestive issues. They drink supplements or follow fad diets. But true health is built through Nairantarya—continuous, unbroken practice. Whether we are focusing on Kapalbhati or refining your asana alignment, the goal is the same: to stop the chatter of the mind and find stability in the body.
