About Project Spotlight: A GRIHA Platinum Rated Home

Achieving a GRIHA Platinum rating isn't about expensive technology; it is about passive design. In this Hyderabad project, we utilized hollow clay blocks and strategic building orientation to naturally regulate temperatures, effectively reducing the need for artificial cooling while ensuring the living spaces remain in constant contact with the garden.

Building with the Climate

The GRIHA Platinum rating is not merely a label; it represents a commitment to soil conservation, water efficiency, and energy optimization. For this residence in Jubilee Hills, we moved away from conventional concrete-heavy construction to embrace vernacular techniques. By using hollow clay blocks and rugged stone, we created a thermal envelope that keeps the interior cool even during Hyderabad's intense summers.

The Art of Passive Cooling

Design is the first line of defense against the heat. We integrated traditional elements like the verandah and a central courtyard, which act as lungs for the house. These are not just aesthetic choices; they are functional tools for cross-ventilation. When the breeze moves through a verandah into a courtyard, the air temperature drops naturally. We reinforced this with sloping Mangalore tile roofs and careful solar orientation analysis, ensuring that the sunlight highlights the texture of the walls without overheating the rooms.

Material Integrity

We believe that materials should show their character. The exposed brickwork and stone walls in this home provide a tactile, grounded experience that modern plastering often hides. Every material was selected for its lifecycle impact, utilizing local sources to reduce the carbon footprint. Whether it is the red oxide flooring or the clay tile filler roofs, each element serves a dual purpose: it supports the building's structure and tells a story of sustainable living. This project serves as a proof of concept—showing that a large, modern home can exist in harmony with the environment without sacrificing luxury or comfort.

For over 30 years, I have been designing homes that respect the climate rather than fighting it. I focus on bringing back the verandahs and courtyards that allow us to live in harmony with nature, using materials that feel grounded and real.
