The Craft of Building: Authentic Vernacular Architecture

A building is born from the earth and the hands that shape it. This is a look at our process, where natural materials like stone and brick meet the human touch to create homes that breathe.

A house takes shape with walls of natural, random rubble stone. Here, workers are installing the wooden framework for a traditional sloping roof, a process that requires precision and teamwork.

The final touches. A craftsman carefully works on the central point of a brick dome, a testament to the patience and handcrafted excellence that defines our building process.

Brick by brick, an earthen shell structure is formed. This image captures a mason at work on the Rohtak Dome, showcasing the raw beauty of the construction phase.

Perched on scaffolding, our team works on the details of a sloping roof against a stone wall. This is where design meets execution, rooted in nature and built by hand.

The skeleton of a roof structure is laid over rammed earth and stone walls, set against a backdrop of the natural landscape. We build in harmony with the environment, not against it.

An interior view during construction. The rugged stone walls are in place, and a worker clears debris. The openings for doors and windows already frame the landscape outside.

Workers carefully place Mangalore tiles on the roof of a stone house. The warm sunlight highlights the texture of the stone and the richness of the wood, even during construction.

About The Craft of Building

We do not just hand over drawings and walk away. On site, our process involves guiding masons through specific earth techniques like jack arch roofing and rammed earth wall construction. This active supervision ensures the integrity of the design, where we troubleshoot structural details on the ground before they become permanent fixtures in your home.

Building with Intention

Architecture is not about creating a shell; it is about managing climate, light, and texture. When we undertake a project, we are not simply assembling concrete and steel. We are working with the thermal mass of stone, the cooling properties of Mangalore tile roofs, and the airflow provided by jaali screens. This approach creates a living environment that responds to the changing sun and wind patterns throughout the day.

The Physicality of Design

Computer renderings can be deceptive. To ensure our clients truly understand their future space, we create physical, handmade models for every project. These scale models allow us to demonstrate how light will fall across a room at noon or how a courtyard will capture the breeze during the monsoon. This tangible preview allows for informed decision-making long before the first brick is laid.

Techniques That Endure

Our construction process leans on time-tested vernacular methods that modern construction often overlooks:

  • Load-Bearing Masonry: Using rammed earth and stone to eliminate the need for heavy concrete columns, which reduces the carbon footprint and keeps interiors cooler.
  • Jack Arch & Filler Slabs: Traditional roofing methods that provide structural strength while reducing concrete volume and adding aesthetic character to ceilings.
  • Earthen Shells: Techniques like the Rohtak Dome are built with patience and precision, relying on geometric stability rather than chemical bonding agents.

By staying on-site during these critical phases, we bridge the gap between design theory and real-world execution, ensuring that every corner of the house is built with the precision it deserves.

I am Sathya Prakash. I believe that buildings should be as open and honest as the people who live in them. My team and I focus on bringing back the verandah breeze and the cooling touch of stone, crafting spaces that feel alive because they are built with nature, not against it.
