Dance is so much more than rhythmic footwork. It is the language of the soul. Here, we delve into the nuances of abhinaya to turn every performance into a living, breathing story.

Abhinaya comes from the soul. It is a language of pure emotion, expressing love, longing, and devotion without a single word. This is the sringara rasa, or the expression of love, flowing effortlessly.

Exploring the subtle expressions and hand gestures, or mudras, that form the heart of abhinaya. Each movement tells a part of the story, conveying deep meaning and feeling.

My senior disciples practicing the abhinaya for the bhajan 'Shree Ramachandra'. Notice how they use their facial expressions and movements to convey devotion, even while seated. This is a core part of our training.

Understanding the character is key to expressive storytelling. I always take time to explain the history and emotions of figures like Meera, so my students can portray her with authenticity and depth.

Visualizing the classics in the studio. Before the body can dance, the mind and heart must feel the story. This is a glimpse into my personal process of connecting with a piece before I choreograph or teach it.

About The Art of Abhinaya: Storytelling Through Dance

Unlike general technique classes, we dedicate specific sessions to dissecting the reasoning behind every movement. When we teach a Meera Bhajan or a Varnam, you are not just memorizing gestures. We spend time exploring the character’s backstory and emotional state, so when you finally step onto the stage, your expression flows naturally from your own understanding rather than just a set routine.
