Dance is so much more than rhythmic footwork. It is the language of the soul. Here, we delve into the nuances of abhinaya to turn every performance into a living, breathing story.

Abhinaya comes from the soul. It is a language of pure emotion, expressing love, longing, and devotion without a single word. This is the sringara rasa, or the expression of love, flowing effortlessly.

Exploring the subtle expressions and hand gestures, or mudras, that form the heart of abhinaya. Each movement tells a part of the story, conveying deep meaning and feeling.

My senior disciples practicing the abhinaya for the bhajan 'Shree Ramachandra'. Notice how they use their facial expressions and movements to convey devotion, even while seated. This is a core part of our training.

Understanding the character is key to expressive storytelling. I always take time to explain the history and emotions of figures like Meera, so my students can portray her with authenticity and depth.

Visualizing the classics in the studio. Before the body can dance, the mind and heart must feel the story. This is a glimpse into my personal process of connecting with a piece before I choreograph or teach it.

About The Art of Abhinaya: Storytelling Through Dance

Unlike general technique classes, we dedicate specific sessions to dissecting the reasoning behind every movement. When we teach a Meera Bhajan or a Varnam, you are not just memorizing gestures. We spend time exploring the character’s backstory and emotional state, so when you finally step onto the stage, your expression flows naturally from your own understanding rather than just a set routine.

At Kalangan, we believe that technique builds the body, but abhinaya touches the spirit. If you have been searching for Bharatanatyam classes in Delhi that look beyond the mechanical aspects of dance, you will find a home here.

Why Our Approach is Different

My training follows the traditional Vazhuvoor style, which inherently values grace and fluidity. However, the core of my teaching philosophy revolves around the guru-parampara tradition I inherited from my mother, the late Guru Smt. Jamuna Krishnan. She taught me that an artiste must become the character they portray.

What You Will Learn

We do not just teach steps. We teach:

  • Character Psychology: Understanding the narrative context behind iconic figures like Meera or Andal.
  • Nuanced Mudras: Using hand gestures not as static poses, but as a vocabulary for emotion.
  • North Indian Bhakti Poetry: We specialize in adapting diverse texts, from Meera Bhajans to Vidyapati, into the Bharatanatyam format, a rare offering that connects deeply with North Indian audiences.

For the Serious Learner

Our Advanced Performance & Abhinaya Course is designed for students who want to master stagecraft. These 90 to 120-minute sessions are rigorous. We focus on stamina, live Nattuvangam coordination, and the subtle art of Rasas, conveying love, sorrow, or devotion in a way that resonates with your audience. Whether you are an adult beginner or a seasoned dancer looking to refine your expression, you are welcome at our Dwarka studio. We are not just a dance school, we are a parivaar where history, art, and emotion come together.
