In Bharatanatyam, every movement tells a story. We teach you how to use your eyes, hands, and heart to express the Navarasas with clarity and feeling.

Even my youngest students learn the power of Abhinaya. Here, a little dancer sits in the Aramandi posture, her expression full of confidence and character.

A senior student captured in a moment of expressive storytelling. Her hand gestures and facial expression work together to convey the emotion of the piece.

The joy of dance shines on this young student's face. Abhinaya is not just about serious emotions; it is also about expressing happiness and celebration.

A beautiful example of how mudras and facial expressions combine to create meaning. This student's playful glance brings her character to life.

The intensity and focus in this student's eyes show her deep connection to the story she is telling through dance. This is the essence of Abhinaya.

A short glimpse into the Navarasas, the nine emotions that form the core of Abhinaya. From love (Shringara) to wonder (Adbhuta), we explore the full spectrum of human feeling.

In Bharatanatyam, the story is told through the eyes. Kannu aanallo ettavum important. I teach my students not just the steps, but how to channel emotion and become storytellers through Abhinaya.

About The Art of Abhinaya: Expression in Motion

Abhinaya is not just about exaggerated expressions, it is about finding the right emotion for every mudra. In my classes, we do not rush the process. Whether you are learning online or at our Bangalore studios, I teach you to break down the lyrics first, understand the sentiment behind the words, and then translate that into your eyes, or as I always say, kannu—the eyes are the most important part.

The beauty of Bharatanatyam lies in its duality: the crisp geometric precision of the Kalakshetra style and the deep, fluid emotional landscape of Abhinaya. My approach focuses on bridging these two worlds. You might master the Aramandi (half-sitting posture) perfectly, but without the correct Bhava (feeling), the dance remains incomplete.

We explore the Navarasas—the nine fundamental emotions—through dedicated training modules. This is not something you learn in a day. It is a slow, methodical practice where we analyze classical poetry and translate the subtext into hand gestures (Mudras) and facial expressions.

I offer this training across all our Bangalore centres (HSR, Koramangala, Whitefield, Harlur) and through live online sessions for those learning remotely. If you are preparing for an Arangetram or simply wish to deepen your understanding of this art form, our curriculum is designed to push your boundaries while keeping the tradition intact. We do not just teach steps, we nurture a dancer's voice. Students regularly bring these stories to life on stage during our annual Nrithya Sandhya and Margam performances, where the lessons of the classroom meet the reality of a live audience.
