Bharatanatyam for Every Age and Ability
Bharatanatyam is not just for children. My academy is a space where kids, working professionals, and parents learn together, celebrating the art form without the pressure of a rigid timeline.
Little Chidanvi, who is only five and a half, is such a diligent student. She shows so much promise and her focus is inspiring.
My oldest student, Subha, loves to dance and constantly tries different things, like this piece on the Hanuman Chalisa. Her passion is infectious.
Subha Nair, in her late 40s, is an inspiration to all the adults in our class. It is a pleasure to watch her innate grace and expressive face.
I am so happy to see how quickly my adult student Subha has progressed. She is an amazing and natural dancer.
There is a beautiful and profound bond between a dance student and her teacher, built on mutual trust and a shared passion for the art.
A candid chat with my young student Prakriti. Her excitement to perform on stage for the first time is what makes teaching so rewarding.
This little student joined just a week ago and has already learned this shloka so well. It would make a teacher's life so much easier if all students learned this quickly.
My student Durga and her daughter Panjami share a profound connection through their mutual passion for Bharatanatyam. It is beautiful to see them dance together.
The interest among adults to learn Bharatanatyam is more than ever. This is for all those women who want to reconnect with a past hobby or learn something new.
Subha, so naturally graceful. Her dedication proves that it is never too late to embrace the art of dance.
About Our Community: Students of All Ages
You might worry about being the oldest or the newest person in class, but that is rarely the reality here. We have adults joining in their late 40s who are just as enthusiastic about mastering a varnam as the five-year-olds are about their basic adavus. The key is that the syllabus is fixed, but the pace is entirely yours.
Building a community across generations is one of the most rewarding parts of my 25-year journey. When you walk into the studio at Ramagondanahalli, you won't see a competitive environment. You will see a grandmother practicing alongside a school student, both focused on their own movement.
For adults, I understand that the body needs different care than a child's. We focus heavily on stamina building and specific thigh conditioning exercises to help you maintain the 'Araimandi' stance safely. It is never too late to start or restart this journey.
For children, the focus remains on the 'Adavu' practice as the bedrock of their training, but we integrate yoga and storytelling to keep them engaged. We bridge these groups through shared cultural milestones like Navaratri or our annual academy days. Whether you join us in Whitefield or connect from across the city for our live online sessions, the expectation is the same: discipline, respect for the Guru, and the joy of learning a traditional art form at a speed that works for your life.
Preetha Arun
I am Preetha. I didn't plan to be a teacher, but after 25 years, I cannot imagine doing anything else. I don't run a factory here; I run a community where we focus on technique, discipline, and simply enjoying the dance.
