Acrylic Painting: Learn to Layer and Blend

Painting isn't just about the final look, it is about the process. Here is a look at how I work with acrylics, from the first layer to the final details.

The start of a painting. Every piece begins with a blank canvas and an idea. Here, I'm laying down the basic colors for a landscape painting on my balcony.

Adding more details to the landscape. This is where the scene starts to come to life, with layers of green for the leaves and texture on the stone path.

Setting up my camera to film the painting process. I then start blocking in the main shapes of the mountains with a base layer of grey acrylic paint.

A quick timelapse of a sunset painting using acrylics. This shows how to blend colors on the canvas to create a smooth gradient for the sky.

For me, painting is a form of therapy. This video shows my process of painting a large pink rose, focusing on the different shades and shapes of the petals.

Another look at the rose painting process. I use a reference image on my tablet to guide the colors and shapes, but I also add my own creative touch.

About this collection

Acrylics can be tricky. The paint dries fast and blending takes practice. Whether I am painting a landscape or a portrait, I often have to make quick, unplanned changes on the canvas. It is not about being perfect from the start, it is about building layers and seeing what works. Painting is my therapy, and I am happy to share how I navigate the canvas during our sessions.

Acrylics are incredibly versatile because they are forgiving. If you mess up, you can simply wait for the paint to dry and paint over it. That is the beauty of this medium. During our 1:1 sessions, we will focus on the basics: how to mix colors, how to use blending stumps or makeup brushes for smoother gradients, and how to fix a background that just isn't working out.

My approach is hands-on. We won't just talk theory, we will paint together. Whether you want to create serene landscapes or are interested in painting expressive portraits, I will show you my techniques for getting the texture right. We can work on your specific project or start with simple shapes to get comfortable with the medium. My home studio in Delhi is set up for live sessions where we can go step by step. Even after 3h ki mehnat (3 hours of hard work), if the piece does not look exactly how you imagined, that is okay. We focus on the progress and the learning, not just the final result.
