Design Explorations: From Concept to Form
We document our design journey from initial hand sketches and massing models to final, high-fidelity renders, exploring how simple geometric forms evolve into functional living spaces.
The beginning of a design. This video shows an architect's hand sketching the initial elevation for a terraced residence, establishing the foundational lines and massing.
A side-by-side comparison showing the evolution of a Bengaluru residence from a fluid, hand-drawn sketch to a polished, realistic render.
From sketch to render, this image shows the development of a design option for a multi-level residence in Bengaluru, featuring terraced gardens and two swimming pools.
A realistic render from our "Terraced and Peeled" exploration, showcasing a structure with flowing white forms, rooftop gardens, and integrated pools that create an organic, hill-like building.
This two-part image from our "Terraced and Peeled" series visualizes a futuristic building with cantilevered levels, a rooftop pool, and extensive green spaces.
A diagram illustrating the process of "terracing and peeling" a simple block form to create a stepped structure with a green roof.
The next step in the "Terraced and Peeled" concept, showing how the stepped form can be further refined with glass fenestrations and a continuous green ramp.
About this collection
Our process begins with hand-sketched lines, not software. Before we touch a CAD tool, we manually iterate on massing models to test how sunlight, volume, and ventilation interact with the site. This allows us to resolve structural complexities, like cantilevered decks or green roofs, long before excavation starts, ensuring the build remains true to the original concept.
Architecture is not just about the final image. At Ochre, it is a sequence of decisions. When we approach a site, we start with simple blocks and conceptual diagrams to understand the raw potential of the land. Our 'Terraced and Peeled' exploration is a direct result of this. We take a solid form and peel it back, creating layers that allow for green roofs, swimming pools, and private terraces that feel like extensions of the building itself.
Why this process matters
When you see a render of a multi-level residence in Bengaluru, you are seeing the result of weeks of balancing load-bearing requirements with aesthetic intent. We coordinate with structural engineers early on to validate soil and water weight loads for rooftop gardens. This transparency in our design development—sharing the sketches alongside the 3D massing models—helps you understand the 'why' behind the design. It prevents the common gap between a beautiful concept and a structurally impossible reality.
Spatial planning and light
We focus on volume and light. Whether it is a residential master plan or a commercial clubhouse, we prioritize how the interior volumes stack and overlap. This often involves planning for deep fenestrations to bring natural light into the core of the building. By sharing our diagrams, we invite you to see how we define the relationship between the built structure and the landscape, ensuring that your space feels open and grounded at the same time.
Ochre Architects
We are Ochre. We believe architecture is a slow, thoughtful process that begins with a pencil and paper, not a pre-built template. Our team explores the potential of every site by sketching, building models, and iterating until the form feels exactly right for the landscape.
