These projects represent the core of our practice: creating spaces that respond to human behavior, memory, and local context. From heritage renovations to modern commercial hubs, we build environments that feel like a natural extension of the people who use them.

At Humble Bean in Bengaluru, the entire interior is a sensory experience designed to mirror a perfect cup of coffee. This view highlights the monolithic, bean-shaped brew bar that meanders through the space, guiding movement and putting the craft of coffee making on theatrical display.

For Capsul in Mumbai, we transformed a former bank into a gritty, adaptive retail environment. The design uses raw materials like concrete pavers and wood, creating distinct zones that encourage exploration, while a custom lighting grid sets a dynamic, urban mood.

Champaca Bookstore is a sanctuary designed for quiet contemplation. We used simple plywood and custom bamboo lighting, but the main feature is the large window, which frames the lush outdoor greenery and brings a sense of natural calm into the reading space.

Every project begins as a conversation, often starting with a hand-drawn sketch. This watercolor concept for Benne in Mumbai captures the intended feeling of a warm, welcoming facade, blending modern simplicity with the soul of Bengaluru's heritage.

Renovations are a magical process of giving a space a new story. This video shows our journey with Benne, from a raw site to a finished restaurant, highlighting the collaboration and on-site improvisation that is essential to our design and build process.

Light is a material we use to transform spaces. At Capsul, the integrated RGB lighting system allows the store to completely change its character, shifting from a focused retail environment to an atmospheric event space with the flip of a switch.

This is the core of our philosophy. We believe the most effective design is not what you see, but what you feel. It serves its purpose so seamlessly that it becomes an invisible backdrop to the human experience within the space.

About this collection

We don't start with mood boards or templates. Every space you see here began as a hand-drawn sketch, born from long conversations about how you live, work, and move. We believe good design should be felt before it is seen, so we focus on crafting spatial narratives that prioritize comfort and intuition over fleeting trends.

Our Design Philosophy: Beyond Aesthetics

At the Office of Cognitive Design, we view architecture as a form of psychology. It is not merely about arranging furniture or picking paint colors. It is about understanding the human experience within a space. Whether we are transforming an old bank into a streetwear retail hub like Capsul in Mumbai, or designing a sanctuary for readers like Champaca in Bengaluru, our approach remains the same.

The Sketch-First Process

Every project we take on is a collaborative journey. We start with a blank piece of paper and a pen. By sketching by hand, we capture the soul of an idea before technical software constraints intervene. This method allows us to remain style-agnostic, ensuring that the final outcome reflects your specific needs rather than a pre-determined aesthetic.

Expertise in Renovation and Adaptive Reuse

We have a particular fondness for older buildings. There is a unique challenge in taking a structure that was built for one purpose and reimagining it for another—like our work on Benne, where we blended Bangalore’s traditional dosa culture with a modern, warm minimalist facade in Mumbai. We embrace the unpredictable nature of renovation, from structural strengthening to finding creative solutions for exposed services.

Why We Prioritize Comfort

Good design is often invisible. It works so well that you don't notice it. When we designed Humble Bean, we built the monolithic coffee bar to naturally guide customer movement and highlight the craft of coffee making. We avoid shouting designs in favor of environments that hold your memories and allow your life to stand out.

We're Kshitija and Raja, the partners behind Office of Cognitive Design. We believe spaces should hold memories, not just furniture, so we start every project with a hand-drawn sketch rather than a catalog. It’s messy and personal, but that’s how we create spaces that genuinely grow with you.
