Designing Quiet Corners: Champaca Bookstore
We shaped Champaca as a quiet escape from Bengaluru's urban chaos. It is a space where architecture facilitates solitude, bridging the gap between a bustling bookstore and a peaceful garden cafe.
The seating area at Champaca is designed to feel like a veranda, blurring the line between indoors and outdoors. Hanging plants and large, openable windows make the surrounding nature a key element of the decor.
We believe spaces should encourage curiosity and discovery. The floor-to-ceiling bookshelf with a rolling ladder invites readers of all ages to explore the vast collection of books.
A glimpse into the cozy interior, where books and people come together. We used simple, honest materials and repurposed furniture to create a warm and unpretentious atmosphere.

We used hanging plants and a simple fabric canopy to soften the light and add to the feeling of being in a tranquil garden. These natural elements contribute to the calm atmosphere of the cafe.

We are proud that our design for Champaca was featured in Elle Decor India's list of Bengaluru's best cafes, recognizing it as a coveted spot for both coffee and culture.
About this collection
The veranda-like atmosphere at Champaca was a deliberate architectural choice to blur the line between indoors and outdoors. We achieved this by using expansive windows and hanging plants, which frame the greenery and bring it into the center of the reading experience. To maintain warmth without relying on cold, industrial finishes, we built the interiors using honest plywood, experimenting with custom stains to give the wood a rich, lived-in texture.
Designing a bookstore requires understanding the psychology of reading. It is not just about placing shelves. It is about creating rhythm and allowing people to find their own quiet corners. In Champaca, we used bamboo and fabric lighting to soften the atmosphere, ensuring the space feels like a garden sanctuary rather than a typical retail outlet.
We prioritize adaptive design, which means we work with what the site offers and introduce materials that age gracefully. Plywood was our primary medium here because of its versatility and warmth. We treated it with various stains, testing different densities to ensure the fixtures felt custom-made yet approachable.
This project also highlights our approach to spatial narrative. We integrated a rolling ladder system to turn browsing into a physical activity, encouraging discovery among readers. The entire layout was structured around the flow of a visitor, moving from the busy entrance into the deeper, quieter zones of the bookstore. We do not chase trends. We look for the story a space wants to tell. Whether it is a bookstore, a cafe, or a commercial fit-out, our goal remains the same: to create environments that invite people to stay, breathe, and linger.
