Residences and Studios for Creatives
Homes that function as vessels for artistic energy, blending living and working spaces through context-aware architecture and honest materials.
This sacred morning space in an artist's home is nestled amidst Honge trees. The design uses earthy lime plaster, terracotta floor tiles with a custom inlay, and a traditional jhula to create a shaded outdoor living area that feels both grounded and poetic.
This outdoor room is designed to filter the east sun through a perforated 'jali' wall and a filler slab ceiling. The two swings offer a place for quiet reflection, suspended between the home and the lush garden canopy.
The morning terrace is an extension of the living space, with a floor pattern of terracotta and blue tiles that flows from inside to out. It is a space designed for slow mornings, shaded by the leaves of the surrounding trees.
Shabnam's house, a project very close to my heart, was designed to evoke a folk-inspired, handmade feel. The goal was to create a seamless living experience with nature, where the garden and the home become one.
The interior of the artist's residence is a multi-level space connected by open staircases. The design uses a mix of wood, concrete, and earthy yellow floors to create a warm, flowing environment that encourages movement and connection.
A home for a creative soul should be able to host a community. Here, the open-plan living area of the artist's residence becomes a gallery and gathering space, with people flowing naturally between the different levels.
The exterior of the artist's residence is designed to blend into its wooded surroundings. The textured walls and large openings are softened by the lush foliage, making the house feel like a natural extension of the garden.
Under the shade of the trees, the tiled patio becomes an informal gathering spot. This space embodies the principle of integrated indoor-outdoor living, providing a place for community and connection with nature.
The house is intentionally nestled within a dense garden. This approach to landscape design ensures that the structure feels private and protected, a hidden sanctuary discovered amongst the trees.
A home is a place for all its inhabitants. Here, a canine friend gazes out at the garden, a quiet moment that illustrates how these spaces are designed to be shared with all forms of life, blurring the boundary between inside and out.
About Residences for Artists & Creatives
I do not design homes and studios as separate, rigid zones. In projects like Archana Hande's studio or Shabnam Virmani's residence, the workspace is woven into the living area rather than cordoned off. We analyze floor patterns, ceiling heights, and light entry to ensure your daily work flow feels connected to your living rhythm, allowing your space to breathe and adapt as your creative process evolves.
Architecture for artists and creatives requires a departure from standard, box-like planning. My approach centers on the understanding that a home is an extension of the creative practice itself. Whether it is a studio that needs to host a community or a quiet residence for deep reflection, the design must remain a malleable backdrop for your life.
Designing for Creative Flow
We look closely at how you move through your day. In artist residences, this often means creating fluid, open-plan areas where a living room can transform into a gallery for hosting, or where a terrace becomes a spill-over space for collaborative work. By utilizing structural elements like exposed concrete and wood, we create a raw aesthetic that allows your art to take center stage without the structure competing for attention.
The Materiality of Space
Materials are selected for their honesty. Exposed brick, lime plaster, and Kota stone are not just finishes; they are tactile elements that age gracefully alongside the inhabitants. In our projects, you will find details like custom-designed staircases, perforated 'jali' walls for passive cooling, and filler slab ceilings that manage light in ways that artificial lighting cannot replicate.
Process and Partnership
This is a journey we undertake together. I believe in a partnership where your input is critical. I work with clients who view their home as a long-term investment in their lifestyle. We will navigate the complexities of site topography, sun paths, and local climate to ensure the structure is not just beautiful, but deeply functional and sustainable. My role is to translate your vision into a living ecosystem where life, work, and nature coexist.
