The rhythm of the mridangam, the precision of the Nattuvangam, and the melody of the flute—a live orchestra does not just accompany my dance, it fuels it. Experience the conversation between music and movement.

A short clip of me practicing Nattuvangam, the art of reciting rhythmic syllables and playing cymbals to conduct a Bharatanatyam performance. It's a skill that deepens my understanding of the rhythm that drives the dance.

The wonderful team of artists I shared the stage with in New Delhi. From left to right: Vishnu on Navtar, myself, Rohith on vocals, my guru Indira Kadambi on Nattuvangam, and Manohar on mridangam.

A rehearsal for "Sharad" with the full live orchestra. You can see the musicians in the background, and their live energy is what fuels my dance.

Practicing for "Karunaada Maanye" with the live musicians. The interplay between the vocalist, mridangam player, and violinist is a live conversation that I respond to with my dance.

A view of the stage at the India International Centre in Delhi, with the musicians set up for the performance. The auditorium itself, with its unique honeycomb ceiling, has a wonderful atmosphere.

About The Complete Experience: With a Live Orchestra

The most critical part of my performance is the live conversation between me and the ensemble. When I perform with a Nattuvangam artist, a vocalist, a mridangist, and a violinist, we are not just following a script. We are reacting to each other in real-time, which means the energy of the performance is unique to that exact moment.

My performances are built on the interplay between the dancer and the orchestra. Unlike recorded audio, a live ensemble brings a dynamic quality to the music that allows for spontaneity. Whether it is a traditional Margam solo or a thematic production, the presence of 4 to 5 professional Carnatic musicians transforms the space.

We work as a single unit, with the Nattuvangam setting the rhythm, the vocalist carrying the raga, and the percussionists anchoring the movement. This setup requires a technical sound check of 45 to 60 minutes before we begin to ensure the balance is perfect for the specific venue acoustics. For those hosting events, this means accounting for both stage space for the ensemble and the time required for them to set up. I believe this authentic experience connects deeper with the rasikas in the audience because you are hearing and seeing the art form in its most vibrant, natural state.

I'm Dr. Ramya Suresh, and I see Bharatanatyam as a live dialogue. Whether I'm performing in Bangalore or across India, having my orchestra there is non-negotiable. Their energy is the reason I can pour so much heart into every piece.
