A dance performance is only as good as the pulse behind it. Meet the talented vocalists and musicians who bring every rhythmic step to life in our productions.

A fun moment with our talented vocalist, Raghuram Rajagopalan, during a rehearsal. His voice is an integral part of many of our productions.

Another clip of Raghuram, showcasing his incredible vocal talent. The connection between the dancer and the musician is what creates magic on stage.

More glimpses of Raghuram's vocal prowess. The music sets the mood and drives the narrative of our performances.

The raw emotion in Raghuram's voice is palpable even in a casual rehearsal setting. He is a master of his craft.

A short clip of Raghuram singing a beautiful Kannada verse. The music we use is deeply rooted in our cultural heritage.

About this collection

When you book a performance, you aren't just getting me on stage; you are getting the full ensemble. I bring a 4-5 piece live orchestra—vocalist, mridangam, violin or flute, and nattuvangam—because recorded audio simply cannot capture the spontaneous energy of a live Margam. We coordinate a mandatory technical sound check two hours before the event to ensure every beat is perfectly balanced for your venue's acoustics.

For me, the music is not just background noise; it is the soul of the performance. A Bharatanatyam recital is a conversation between the dancer and the musician, and when you remove the live element, that conversation often falls flat. That is why I insist on a live music ensemble for my shows, whether it is a solo Margam or a grand group production.

The Anatomy of Our Sound

Every show features a handpicked team of professionals. You get a dedicated Carnatic vocalist who holds the narrative, a mridangam player providing the heartbeat, a violinist or flautist for the melodic layers, and a nattuvangam expert to conduct the rhythm. This isn't a generic backing track; it is a live, breathing setup that reacts to the energy of the room.

Why Live Matters

If you have ever watched a performance where the dancer is anticipating the music rather than flowing with it, you know the difference. In our productions, the musicians follow my movements, and I follow their phrasing. This synergy is what makes the storytelling feel urgent and alive. From the intricate footwork in a Tillana to the subtle abhinaya (expression) during a padam, the live orchestra captures the nuances that a recording misses.

Practical Logistics

We handle the heavy lifting regarding the orchestra. My team includes a dedicated stage manager who cues the musicians and manages the equipment setup. Because we travel with a full ensemble—often 5 to 7 people for larger shows—we require a proper stage layout and specific mic placements, which we detail during our pre-show tech check. We believe that if the sound isn't right, the dance can't shine, so we take the acoustic setup as seriously as the choreography itself.

I’m Parshwanath, and honestly, without the musicians, I’m just a guy jumping around in costume. These artists are the heartbeat of Punyah Theatre; we breathe the same rhythm, argue about the same notes, and eventually, create magic on stage.
