Explore my craft, from intricate Japanese Kumiko art and custom furniture builds to the prototypes I help designers bring to life.
This handcrafted Kumiko lamp, made from beechwood and white ash, shows the beauty of traditional Japanese joinery. The delicate Asa-no-ha pattern creates a warm, inviting glow, perfect for adding a touch of artistry to any room.
For the discerning feline, a 5-level cat tree built with sturdy turned Salwood pillars and smooth Birch plywood. This isn't just cat furniture; it's a custom-designed play-and-relax tower made to last.
The best part of my work is seeing the pride on my students' faces. Here are some amazing projects from a weekend workshop: a toy scooter, a vinyl record holder, and a custom helmet stand. You can build something amazing too.
Before a single piece of full-size furniture is built, a detailed scale model can bring an interior design concept to life. This miniature bedroom prototype helps visualize space, texture, and layout in a tangible way.
The heart of Kumiko is in the hands. Here, I'm carefully fitting together small, precisely cut pieces of wood to form the traditional Asa-no-ha pattern. This nail-free technique requires patience and a deep respect for the craft.
A classic rocking horse, built to be passed down through generations. This piece is mid-assembly, with the body clamped and glued, showing the solid wood construction that ensures it can handle years of play.
This is Mooshka, a wooden automata prototype I built from scrap wood. Automata are a fantastic way to explore mechanical principles like cams and levers, turning simple movements into a story.
About Featured
Building by hand is about more than the final object. It is about learning how the wood behaves, understanding grain direction, and getting comfortable with tools you might have only seen on screens. Whether you are looking to commission a custom furniture piece for your home or want to join a weekend workshop to build something yourself, the process always starts with a practical conversation about what you are trying to create.
Why Hands-On Matters
In an era dominated by screens and mass production, there is an undeniable satisfaction in building something tangible. My workshop in Singasandra serves as a space for that exact pursuit. Whether I am crafting a delicate Japanese Kumiko lamp using White Ash or helping a student build their first rocking horse, the focus remains on the craft.
Custom Furniture and Prototypes
For those seeking bespoke solutions, I move beyond standard carpentry. I use 19mm Boiling Water Proof (BWP) plywood and solid pine to build functional, durable furniture that fits your space, not just the nearest corner. From cat trees with eucalyptus pillars to adjustable desks, each build is designed for longevity. I also bridge the gap for designers by creating scale models, using Balsa wood and MDF, to test joinery and spatial flow before you commit to large-scale production.
Mastering the Technique
- Kumiko Woodworking: I specialize in traditional Japanese lattice patterns like Asa-no-ha. These pieces are assembled without nails or glue, relying entirely on the precision of hand-cut tension joints.
- Workshop Experience: If you want to learn, my weekend classes in Bangalore and Pune are open to everyone. You will trade your keyboard for a saw, learn to operate power tools safely, and leave with a piece you built yourself, rather than just an observation of someone else's work.
It is about the process, the sawdust, and the moment when a complex joint finally fits together. If you have an idea, a project, or just a curiosity about woodworking, let us talk.
Kydo
I am Swapnil, and Kydo is where we trade keyboards for saws. I believe anyone can build something real if they have the right tools and a little bit of patience.
