About Alternative & Analog Photography

When you book a wet plate collodion portrait session with us, you are not receiving a digital file. You are getting a unique glass plate, hand-poured and developed right here in our studio. It is a slow, 45-minute process that captures a different kind of detail and honesty, something we have spent years perfecting so you can take home a piece of living history.

At Kānike, we believe photography is an act of patience. We have built our studio around the belief that historical processes like Cyanotype, Wet Plate Collodion, and Albumen prints offer a tactile experience that digital photography simply cannot replicate.

Our Analog Philosophy

We don't just take pictures. We create objects. Whether we are experimenting with 4x5 inch glass plates or coating 300 GSM cotton rag paper for a cyanotype, every step of our process involves manual work. We mix our own developers, source unique papers, and often adjust our chemical formulas to get the perfect tonal range for your specific project.

Portrait Sessions

Our wet plate collodion sessions are one-on-one experiences. Because this technique dates back to the 1800s, it requires a longer exposure time, which forces a different kind of connection between the subject and the lens. You will see us working with the camera, the chemicals, and the light, turning the studio into a working darkroom for the afternoon. These sessions are ideal if you are looking for a portrait that feels timeless and deeply personal.

Custom Commissions

Beyond portraits, we offer custom work for your space. If you are looking for art that fits a specific interior palette, we can create a series of cyanotypes, using vinegar or other modifiers to extend the tonal range to match your wall colors. From the rusty red of laterite mud to cool forest greens, we adapt our chemistry to suit your vision.

All our work, whether it is a small zine or a large framed portrait, is intended to be held, shared, and kept.
