More than just an ensemble, we are a gurukulam. Meet the family behind the rhythmic roar of our Chenda Melam performances across Bangalore.

Our 2024 batch of Chenda students with their Gurus. This is the family that learns, grows, and performs together.

About The Kalavadhyam Kudumbam (Our Family)

Every performance you see is backed by a learning ecosystem of over 800 active students. We train everyone from young children to enthusiastic adults, including dedicated batches for women, ensuring the specific Kshethra style techniques handed down by our Gurunaadhans remain authentic and vibrant in every beat we play.

For us, Kalavadhyam is not just a commercial group, it is our family. Over the past 15 years in Bangalore, we have evolved from a small collective into a Gurukulam, a place where the sacred traditions of Kerala percussion are lived and breathed. We believe that to truly preserve the soul of the Chenda Melam, the knowledge must be passed directly from the Guru to the student.

Our 'Kudumbam' consists of a diverse range of artists. When we perform for a temple festival or a corporate event, you are seeing a unit that practices together, travels together, and shares a deep devotion to the rhythmic structures of Panchari, Pandi, and Panchavadhyam. This is why our performances carry a distinct energy; our artists are not just hired hands, they are students of the craft.

We are particularly proud of our inclusive approach. We run dedicated batches for children, whom we call our 'varumkaala padanaayakanmaar' (future leaders), and we have seen a beautiful rise in our 'sthree saannidhyam' (female presence) on stage. Whether it is a full-scale Pooram ensemble with 50 artists or a smaller, compact team for a procession, the discipline remains the same. The rhythm follows the rigorous classical standards of the temple, from the slow, meditative opening beats to the thunderous finale known as the 'Kalasam'.

If you join our classes or invite us to perform, you are becoming part of this extended family. We maintain the traditional Shastriya style, ensuring that even as we perform in modern venues across Bangalore, the sanctity of our art is never compromised.
