Behind the Scenes at Yogakshema: Iyengar Yoga Practice
Yoga is a science of alignment, not just exercise. Here is a look into the daily practice, community events, and the philosophy that guides us at my studio in Mandi House.
This clip shows the essence of Iyengar yoga: alignment, balance, and strength. It's not just about flexibility; it's about building inner peace and a strong, healthy body.
With a little support, we can find comfort in the journey while building strength and balance. This is the essence of my teaching at Yogakshema.
A class in session, with students of all levels working together. The collective focus and energy create a powerful environment for growth.
Standing before the image of my Guru, I am forever inspired by his teachings. His wisdom is the light that guides my path and the path of my students.
"Practice asanas by creating space in the muscles and skin." This quote from Guruji is a guiding principle in my classes. Here, I am demonstrating this principle in Gomukhasana.
A moment from a past event, filled with mindfulness and connection. These gatherings are an important part of our community at Yogakshema.
"Move with intention, breathe with purpose, and find stillness within." This student, in a supported restorative pose, is embodying this principle.
A student in Supta Baddha Konasana (Reclining Bound Angle Pose). This restorative pose is excellent for calming the mind and opening the hips.
A joyful moment from one of our events. My father, Dr. Murli Manohar Joshi, is speaking, and I am listening with pride and gratitude.
About Additional Work & Insights
In these images, you see props like chairs, ropes, and trestles used not as accessories, but as clinical tools. When I conduct a session at Yogakshema, these are not just for support. We use them to create traction for the spine and precise alignment for the joints. If you are struggling with chronic pain or stiffness, we use these tools to bypass your current limitations, allowing your Pran Shakti (energy) to flow where it is currently blocked.
A Sanctuary for Healing
Yogakshema in Mandi House was built with a specific intent: to move away from the noise of commercial fitness and focus on the science of the body. You will see from these glimpses that our space is designed for introspection. The wooden flooring is shock-absorbent to protect your joints, and the environment is intentionally quiet to allow the mind to settle.
Why the Props Matter
People often ask why I insist on using so many ropes, blocks, and belts. The answer is simple: precision. Most people have bodies that have learned to compensate for weakness, creating 'blockages' in the muscle and skin. By using these props, we force the body into the correct alignment. It is not a shortcut; it is a way to ensure that your practice heals your skeletal structure rather than straining it.
The Community Element
You will also see events where we gather to discuss health and mindfulness. Yoga is solitary work, but it is deeply strengthened by a community of practitioners. My father, Dr. Murli Manohar Joshi, often joins us, emphasizing the convergence of traditional values and modern living. Whether it is a restorative session or a discussion on lifestyle, the goal is always the same: to build a rock-solid mind capable of facing any battle.
If you see a pose in these photos that looks complex, understand that every student started exactly where you are today. We do not jump into advanced asanas. We build a foundation, brick by brick, ensuring that the body is ready before we ask it to go deeper.
