Varamahalakshmi pooja at home in Bengaluru
It all lands on one Friday. So we asked nine people in Bengaluru who do this work about the pooja, from dressing the kalasha to thamboola for the guests, and read the 52 requests families sent us. Here's what it costs, who can help and what to settle before 13 August 2027.
What does a Varamahalakshmi pooja at home cost in Bengaluru?
If you dress the kalasha yourself, your first Varamahalakshmi costs about ₹3,000 to ₹4,400: a brass pot, a simple face and saree, flowers and fruit. The big money is what you add: a decorator's backdrop, about ₹10,000 to ₹25,000 for one 6 to 8 feet each way, and a haldi-kumkum lunch at ₹300 to ₹600 a plate. After the first year, the pooja itself is about ₹800 to ₹1,700 in flowers and fruit.
About ₹3,000 to ₹4,400
Yourself, the first year: a brass pot, a simple face and saree, flowers and fruit
Our sum: a brass kalash from ₹1,380, a zinc face ₹225, a satin saree and blouse piece, and festival-week flowers and fruit. Coconuts, betel, rice and oil on top
About ₹7,400 to ₹8,800 the first year
Yourself, with a brass face and jewellery you keep for years
Our sum: the simple kalasha above with a brass face (₹1,500), a stone-set necklace and a crown. Next year, only the flowers and fruit again
About ₹13,000 to ₹29,000
With a decorator's backdrop behind the Goddess
Our sum: the simple kalasha, plus about ₹10,000 to ₹25,000 for a backdrop 6 to 8 feet each way, what decorators here charge for a pooja backdrop (question 5). Dressing the Goddess is usually extra
About ₹32,000 to ₹64,000
A backdrop, plus lunch and thamboola for 50 ladies
Our sum: the backdrop line above, plus a caterer's lunch at ₹300 to ₹600 a plate and thamboola. The lunch is most of it (question 6). Before GST, transport, a priest or a draper
Do I need a priest for Varamahalakshmi pooja, or can I do it myself?
No. Varamahalakshmi is the woman's own vratha: she sets up the kalasha, does the pooja and reads the vratha katha herself. If it's your first year and nobody at home can walk you through it, a priest makes it easier. No priest or temple we could check publishes a fee for this pooja, so agree his dakshina before the day.
How do I get the Varamahalakshmi idol or kalasha dressed, and what does it cost?
It depends on what you want to see. For a full figure with hands and a crown, buy a ready-dressed Lakshmi idol: ₹2,000 to ₹8,000 in Jayanagar, Basavanagudi or Malleshwaram shops. For the kalasha look with no skill needed, a pre-stitched saree slips over the pot for about ₹1,060. To have it done your family's way, call a draper. The idol and the saree are bought once; you still need the pot and face for the saree (question 4). A draper is paid every year, and we found no published price for one in Bengaluru.
What do I need to buy for the Varamahalakshmi kalasha?
For the kalasha: a pot, rice to fill it, mango leaves and a coconut for the top, a face, a saree with a blouse piece, some jewellery, kumkum and turmeric, a sacred thread and a lamp. Then fresh flowers and fruit on the day. A brass face is about ₹1,500 and silver starts around ₹13,600; both are normal.
Why do Varamahalakshmi decoration prices vary so much?
Mostly how much gets built, and whether the flowers are real. Across Bengaluru, a backdrop about 6 to 8 feet each way behind the Goddess costs about ₹10,000 to ₹25,000, and a whole wall of flowers or a mandap built round her about ₹20,000 to ₹50,000. Real flowers cost more: the festival backdrop Dream Party Link priced for Ganapati starts at ₹10,000 in artificial flowers and ₹20,000 in real ones. Then come the extras: dressing the Goddess, lamps and transport.
One arch of flowers
Baby's breath and white roses on a plain green wall
A whole setting
A rose arch, a wall of leaves, silver elephants and four tall lamps
What do thamboola and lunch cost for Varamahalakshmi haldi-kumkum guests?
Your guests expect thamboola, but lunch is your choice, and for 50 it's the biggest bill of the day. A blouse piece and kumkum for each guest cost about ₹77 to ₹87. A caterer's lunch is ₹300 to ₹600 a plate, so ₹15,000 to ₹30,000 for 50. Keep a few extra thamboola packs for the neighbour who comes unasked.
When is Varamahalakshmi in 2027, and what time should I do the pooja?
Friday 13 August 2027. Drik Panchang's good times in Bengaluru that day are 6:27 to 8:30 in the morning, 12:38 to 2:50 in the afternoon and 6:51 to 8:32 in the evening, and it calls the evening the best. So on a working Friday, an evening pooja is fine. Both calendars we checked give the 13th. Still, check with your nearest temple: in 2026, Drik Panchang said 28 August while Bengaluru kept the 21st.
How much advance do Varamahalakshmi decorators take, and what if they cancel or I change the date?
Most of the six decorators here take 30% to 50% upfront, and if you cancel once the flowers are bought, most or all of it stays with them. At four of the six, moving the date costs much less than cancelling: nothing at Dream Party Link, a flat ₹2,000 at Dream Decor. Agree the look as a photo and a written list of items. It's what you hold them to if something's missing, and Dream Party Link treats his list as the deal, with no redo if the look differs from a picture.
Before the festival, settle these seven
- The date, checked with your nearest temple, and your good time that day
- Who dresses the Goddess, and whose saree and jewellery go on
- The decorator's look, as a photo and a written list of items
- The setup time, and a ready-by time before your good time
- The advance, and what moving the date costs
- How many thamboola packs, with a few extra
- A proper holder for the lamp, clear of the saree and the drapes
What Bengaluru families asked us for
Requests to mytribe for Varamahalakshmi in 2026, in our words.
Want us to find one?
Varamahalakshmi is one Friday for every home in the city. The decorators and the people who dress the Goddess are all wanted on the same morning, and each can only be in one home at a time.
Tell us once instead. We come back with the decorators and drapers who fit, each priced for your pooja, with their own past work. We already know them: we've checked their real work and their prices, and called their past clients, including about what went wrong. Only about 1 in 10 who apply get in, and every one is re-checked at least every six months. How we verify
Every booking comes with an agreement on what's included and what it costs. It's free for you. The provider pays mytribe a small fee when you book, and you pay them directly, at the same price as going to them yourself. If something isn't going to plan, a person here sorts it out.
The same chat answers questions about the pooja itself, like whether a quote is fair. This guide is about Bengaluru; for another city, ask on the same number.
Decide these before you ask
