How to run your society's Ganesh utsav in Bengaluru
You're spending other people's money. So we asked ten Bengaluru decorators and caterers what a society's Ganesha really involves, from why one quote is four times another to how much advance to pay, and read the 50 requests societies and groups sent us. Here's what it costs, what needs permission and what to settle before collecting from the flats.
What will our society's Ganesha cost, and how much should each flat give?
A three-day Ganesha's idol, decoration and sound cost about ₹16,000 to ₹33,000 if residents do most of it, ₹20,000 to ₹52,000 with a decorator and hired speakers, and ₹1.7 lakh or more for a built mandap and an evening show. A lunch for everyone is often the biggest bill, and caterers here start at ₹299 to ₹575 a plate. For a 150-flat society with a decorator, hired speakers and one lunch for 300, that starts at about ₹730 to ₹1,500 a flat if every flat pays, and rises with the menu you pick.
About ₹16,000 to ₹33,000
Residents do most of it: a small clay idol, market flowers and the society's own speaker
Our sum, for three days. An idol up to 2 ft, ₹500 to ₹8,600. Market flowers, cloth and lights, about ₹15,000 to ₹24,000 by our estimate, since fresh flowers need topping up. The speaker and the residents' programme cost nothing
About ₹20,000 to ₹52,000
A 3 to 4 ft clay idol, a decorator's backdrop and hired speakers
Our sum, for three days. The idol about ₹8,000 to ₹15,000, our estimate. A decorator's backdrop, at starting prices from ₹5,000 in artificial flowers, or a fixed package up to about ₹25,000. A hired PA system, ₹7,000 to ₹12,000
About ₹1.7 lakh to ₹2.3 lakh, and up
A 5 ft clay idol, a mandap built for the festival and an evening show
Our sum. The idol about ₹15,000 to ₹30,000, our estimate. A whole mandap from ₹1 lakh, and over ₹1.5 lakh all in fresh flowers for more than three days (one decorator, October 2024). A bigger sound system, about ₹12,000. An orchestra for up to 300 guests, ₹40,000, an anchor included
How do we collect the money from the flats, and show them where it went?
Treat it as a request: we found no Karnataka rule that lets an association add a festival to the maintenance bill. Agree the plan and the amount per flat at a general body meeting, collect into one account, and share every bill after visarjan.
Do we need police permission for a Ganesha inside our apartment complex?
Inside your compound with no loudspeaker, we found no rule that needs police permission, so get your association's yes in writing. A loudspeaker, a procession to the tank or a pandal on the road needs permission, from one of the city's single-window centres.
How big a clay Ganesha is allowed, what does it cost, and where do we immerse it?
Clay only, and 5 ft at most: PoP, thermocol and chemical paints are banned, and the state pollution board limits idols to 5 ft (last restated in 2022, the latest we found). A 3 to 4 ft clay Ganesha costs about ₹8,000 to ₹15,000 and a 5 ft one up to about ₹30,000, by our estimate. Traders also rent bigger fibre idols, but we found nothing on whether the 5 ft limit covers them, so ask when you apply. None of the decorators here sells idols.
Why is one decorator's quote four times another's?
Usually they aren't quoting the same thing. A backdrop for the idol starts at ₹5,000 to ₹20,000, depending on the decorator and the flowers, and fixed packages run to about ₹25,000. A mandap kept up for the whole festival starts around ₹1 lakh, and passes ₹1.5 lakh in fresh flowers for more than three days (one decorator, October 2024). Send each the same brief, with your size, and compare what each covers.
When should we book the idol and the decorator, and do we get the advance back if we cancel?
Book the idol and the decorator by July, for a festival likely on Saturday 4 September 2027, and file for permission as soon as the single-window centres open. In 2026 the city announced them 13 days before the festival. Four of the five decorators below take half or more as an advance, and three of the five say it isn't refunded, so pay once the flats' money is in.
Can we play music at our society's Ganesha, and till what time?
The police ban a DJ, at the pandal and in the procession, and allow sound systems within the noise limits, so bhajans or a playlist on hired speakers are fine. Outdoors, your lawn included, speakers and instruments stop at 10 pm unless your permit allows later, and a closed clubhouse hall can go on if the sound stays inside. We found no police word on an orchestra or a drum group, so ask when you apply.
What if it rains, there's a power cut or someone gets hurt at our Ganesh pandal?
The police hold the committee fully responsible, so work from their own list: two people at the pandal day and night, CCTV, fire extinguishers, emergency numbers on display and nothing that burns near the idol. Put the idol under a roof, settle where the power and the backup come from, and ask each decorator what happens if wind or rain brings the set-up down.
Before Ganesha arrives, settle these six
- The plan and the amount per flat agreed and minuted, and one account for the money
- Permission filed: volunteers, idol height, days, route
- A clay idol of 5 ft or less, ordered early
- The decorator's quote: backdrop or mandap, days, transport, take-down
- No DJ, and speakers off at 10 pm outdoors
- Two people on watch, extinguishers, and power with a backup
What Bengaluru societies asked us for
Requests to mytribe, in our words.
Want us to find one?
A society's Ganesha means several bookings in a few weeks, made with the neighbours' money. The idol, the decorator, the speakers, the food and the permit land on a few volunteers, and festival week is when every decorator and caterer is busiest.
Tell us once, for the decoration and the food. We come back with decorators and caterers who fit your society's brief, each priced for it, with their own past work. We already know them: we've checked their real work and their prices, and called their past clients, including about what went wrong. Only about 1 in 10 who apply get in, and every one is re-checked at least every six months. How we verify
Every booking comes with an agreement on what's included and what it costs, which is something to show the flats. It's free for you. The provider pays mytribe a small fee when you book, and you pay them directly, at the same price as going to them yourself. If something isn't going to plan, a person here sorts it out.
The same chat answers questions about the utsav, like whether a quote is fair. This guide is about Bengaluru; for another city, ask on the same number.
