Q1

What does an emcee or anchor cost in Bengaluru?

A host in Bengaluru costs anything from the hire of a speaker, if a friend holds the mic, to over ₹1 lakh for a face people know from TV. For one wedding function or a company evening, an experienced host charges about ₹25,000 to ₹45,000, before sound, GST and travel. That money buys someone who has held a lot of rooms: they switch between your languages, get the shy ones up and keep a late evening moving. More than half of the 23 people who gave us a budget planned ₹10,000 or less, which pays for a party host at a child's birthday or the cheapest newer anchors. Weddings ran higher: three of the five who gave us a budget for a wedding function planned ₹25,000 or more.

  1. About ₹1,500 to ₹4,000

A friend or relative, on a hired mic

You pay to hire a speaker and two mics. You get someone who knows every name and every family joke. You give up someone who has pulled a quiet room back many times

  2. About ₹3,000 to ₹10,150

    A party host, for a child's birthday

Games for the kids and the grown-ups, and some add magic. The low end is an hour of games from a party company, about ₹3,000 by our AI estimate, since none publishes a price. The top, ₹10,150, is Emcee Krishna's two hours of magic and games at ₹8,500 plus ₹1,650 for his own sound

  3. About ₹10,000 to ₹20,000

A newer anchor, for a family function or an office do

Plenty for a naming ceremony, a society event or an office Independence Day, where the evening follows a running order. One orchestra company here asks ₹10,000 to ₹20,000 across its two price pages

  4. About ₹25,000 to ₹45,000

An experienced host, for a wedding function or a company night

You pay for how they hold a room: switching languages, getting people up for the games, keeping speeches on time and filling a late start. Most hosts with prices on this page are in this range, and Chandana Vasudevan starts at ₹45,000

  5. About ₹1.2 lakh to ₹1.5 lakh

A known face from Kannada TV or films

One orchestra company's price for a TV or film face, for the anchoring only. Guests come to see them, which suits a big company night or a reception for a thousand. Much of the price is the name, and the best-known names quote only when you ask

Q2

Why does one host charge ₹25,000 to ₹35,000 and another ₹45,000 onwards?

Chandana's extra buys a host with over 1,000 shows by her own count, from family sangeets to company launches, who opens in Kannada, English and Hindi. Her one price also covers a four-hour show at any guest count, with a replacement at the same price if she can't come. For a Hindi or Marwari family's sangeet of up to about 200 to 300 guests, Jyoti Kochatta fits well and costs less.

₹45,000 onwards

Hosts in Hindi, English and Marwari, games in her fee

Hosts in Kannada and English, with Hindi as Hinglish

Most functions run 2 to 2.5 hours, a sangeet about 3

A show of about 4 hours, with any waiting counted inside them

Covers up to about 200 to 300 guests, then quoted separately

The same price at any size

If she can't come, a backup host if she can find one, and if not, your advance back

If she can't come, your advance back in full and a replacement at the same price

Q3

What's in the fee, and what costs extra?

The fee covers one function for a set number of hours. Sound is usually not in it: 4 of the 5 hosts with prices here bring none. Settle travel and running late before you agree a number.

Q4

I've never seen this host work. How do I know they're any good?

A highlights reel won't tell you. Ask for a few unbroken minutes from a room like yours, a number for someone they worked for last month, and a call with the host before you pay.

Q5

Will one host handle my family's languages?

For Kannada, Hindi and English, yes: 4 of the 7 hosts here have confirmed all three. Nicole Adams is the only host here who does both Tamil and Telugu. None of the seven works in Malayalam yet.

Q6

How far ahead do I need to book a host?

Send the date as soon as you have it, because what runs out is the host you want on that date. People here ask late: half of the 38 Bengaluru requests we looked at came 12 days or less before the event.

Q7

What does the host actually do, and what's left for me?

The host runs the evening, off a page you write. Send the running order, the names the way they're said, the do-not-say list, and the name of one person who tells the host to start.

Q8

How much is the advance, and what if the date moves?

The advance blocks your date. At 4 of the 5 hosts with prices here it's half the fee, and at those four you don't get it back if you cancel. If the date moves, it depends on the host, and on whether they turned other work away for your date.

Q9

Can my company pay after the event, and get a GST invoice?

Not all of it. 4 of the 5 hosts with prices here want half the fee up front, to hold your date. On GST, Chandana adds it on top of her ₹45,000 onwards, and Jyoti adds 18% if you want an invoice. For the others, ask on the first call.

Before you pay, settle these seven

  1. One fee, and the hours it covers
  2. What running past those hours costs
  3. Who brings the mics and speakers
  4. The travel charge, if the venue moves
  5. Which of your languages they host in
  6. The advance, if the date moves
  7. The name of who will actually come

Want us to find one?

Doing this yourself takes a week. You message ten hosts, many don't reply to a number they don't know, the ones who do send packages that don't line up, and Instagram only shows each one's best day.

Tell us once instead. We come back with the hosts who fit, each priced for your event, with their own past work. We already know them: we've checked their real work and their prices, and called their past clients, including about what went wrong. Only about 1 in 10 who apply get in, and every one is re-checked at least every six months. How we verify

Every booking comes with an agreement on what's included and what it costs. It's free for you. The host pays mytribe a small fee when you book, and you pay them directly, at the same price as going to them yourself. If something isn't going to plan, a person here sorts it out.

The same chat answers questions about the event itself, like whether a quote is fair. This guide is about Bengaluru; for another city, ask on the same number.
