A close up video of a practice session, or 'riyaaz', at home. This is where I refine my skills, exploring complex rhythmic cycles and compositions in a focused, personal setting.
This clip shows the process of tuning the tabla before a performance. It is a crucial ritual to ensure the perfect pitch and resonance, followed by a short demonstration of the prepared sound.
About Hindustani Tabla Solo
When you book a solo performance, I do not just play the drums; I bring the full experience of a traditional concert to your venue. I perform in the classic Baithak style, seated on the floor, and I always ensure a professional Lehra player (on Harmonium or Sarangi) accompanies me. This creates the authentic, balanced sound cycle required for a proper classical recital, turning your event space into a dedicated concert hall for 60 to 90 minutes.
The Art of the Solo
My approach to a tabla solo is rooted in the Kirana Gharana tradition, specifically the intricate and powerful techniques of the Ajrara style. A solo performance is not just about speed or volume; it is a conversation between the artist, the instrument, and the listener. I focus on bringing out rare compositions—Peshkaar, Kayda, Rela, and Gats—that define the history of this instrument.
What Goes Into a Performance
- Baithak Setup: I prefer a floor-level setup to maintain the traditional aesthetic and acoustic connection with the audience.
- The Lehra: A performance is incomplete without the melodic cycle provided by a Lehra player. I include a professional accompanist in every solo booking to maintain the time cycle.
- Technical Requirements: While I am flexible with venues, a quiet, acoustic-friendly environment is best. If the venue is large or outdoors, basic sound reinforcement for the tabla and the Lehra will be necessary to ensure clarity.
Why Choose This Style
Whether you are hosting a private house concert, a corporate dinner, or a cultural gathering, a Hindustani tabla solo adds a layer of sophistication that standard entertainment cannot match. It is an immersive experience. My goal is to guide you and your guests to that 'sam'—the rhythmic point of arrival—where the music and the audience become one. I have never missed a scheduled gig, and I bring that same reliability and passion to every performance.
