We revisit the milestones that defined our philosophy. These projects taught us the value of restraint, context, and the stories hidden within stone and timber.

A look back at the Kumar Residence, one of our earliest milestone projects. This home, with its lush green wall, taught us about the power of restraint and bringing nature indoors.

A dining nook in the Kumar Residence, featuring custom copper pendant lights and a view of the vertical garden. This project was about creating quiet moments where detail and craft could shine.

The Modi Residence, another one of our memorable early projects. Here, we experimented with an origami-inspired stone wall and sculptural brass lighting to create a dramatic dining space.

In the Modi Residence, we transformed a structural column into a design feature and used bold color, like this yellow floor lamp, to create visual interest and define zones.

The Bhasker Residence, a renovation project that taught us about turning constraints into creativity. A structural column became a fluted organic form, and a fireplace was reimagined as a serving ledge.

The Chandhiok Residence, our AD100 project from 2019. This space showcases our expertise in creating custom built-in furniture and designing open, flowing layouts that are both functional and beautiful.

A quiet corner in the Bammi Residence basement lobby, featuring an antique wooden horse from Kutch. This space welcomes guests with a blend of rustic charm and historical significance.

The ground floor family lounge at the Bammi Residence, where a custom sideboard by Furgonomics is paired with a gallery wall of family photos. The design creates a space that is both stylish and deeply personal.

The entrance foyer of the Bammi Residence, featuring a unique stone door with cast brass handles. The design pays tribute to India's heritage while embracing sustainable luxury.

The entrance to 'The 42' in Kolkata, featuring honed granite walls and a crafted main door. The foyer showcases a Revati Sharma Singh installation, setting a tone of artistic luxury from the moment of entry.

About Retrospective: Our Foundational Projects

The Kumar Residence was one of our earliest milestones, serving as a defining lesson in the power of restraint. By integrating a vertical garden with precise material choices, we learned that architecture breathes when you prioritize space over ornamentation, allowing the specific details to emerge naturally.

Every project acts as a marker on a long timeline of exploration. This collection revisits the residences that forced us to slow down and rethink our approach. At the Modi Residence, for instance, we encountered a structural column that seemed to disrupt the flow of the room. Rather than hiding it, we reimagined it as a sculptural centerpiece. This shift in perspective—viewing constraints as opportunities to invent—became the foundation of our current practice. We used origami-inspired stone walls and warm brass lighting to define the dining area, proving that a home's character often comes from solving the difficult problems first.

Similarly, the Bhasker Residence renovation required us to turn an existing fireplace into a functional serving ledge, a move that respected the structure while introducing a fresh, modern utility. These early years, spent working on the Kumar, Modi, and Bhasker homes, established our commitment to contextual design. We realized that if a space is to hold meaning, it must reflect the lives of those within it. We started choosing materials for their inherent properties—honed granite, brass, and local timbers—and working directly with the people who shape them. This history of experimentation continues to guide how we approach every new home we design today. We no longer just build rooms, we construct memories through a deliberate, grounded process that respects the past while building for the future.

We are Amrita Guha and Joya Nandurikar. For over twenty-five years, we have focused on shaping spaces that prioritize narrative, context, and heritage over temporary trends. Our work centers on the belief that a home should tell a story, whether through a single sculptural element or the way light interacts with local materials.
