Hand-Painted Oil Pet Portraits on Canvas
I paint realistic oil portraits of your pets, capturing the quirks and expressions that make them family. It is a slow, therapeutic process that turns your favorite photo into a lasting keepsake.
This was my first time painting a dog portrait, and I loved every moment. This video shows the process from the initial sketch to the final brushstrokes that bring the dog's fluffy fur and sparkling eyes to life.
About Pet Portraits
Capturing a pet’s personality on canvas takes more than just getting the colors right. I use a grid method to ensure accuracy, especially with facial features, but the real work happens in the layers. I focus on the details, like the wetness of a nose or the specific way their eyes sparkle, to make sure the portrait feels exactly like your companion.
I believe that painting is a slow, meditative process. When I take on a pet commission, I do not just paint a subject; I try to understand the soul behind those eyes. My process involves several steps to ensure the final piece lasts for years. First, we start with a clear, high-resolution photo of your pet. I use the grid method to sketch the outline, which gives me the precision needed for a realistic likeness.
After that, I build the portrait using high-quality Camlin oil colors, layering them carefully to create depth and texture, whether it is soft fur or their playful expression. Because I use oil paints, the process requires patience. The paint needs time to dry and cure, which usually takes about two to three weeks. I finish every piece with a protective varnish to keep the colors vibrant and shield the canvas from yellowing. If you have a specific pose in mind or a favorite accessory your pet wears, let me know. My goal is to create something that feels like home whenever you look at it.
