Capturing the Spirit of My Bharatanatyam Performances
Beyond the studio, the stage is where my research and choreography come to life. These are moments from my recent festival performances and collaborative projects.
A moment captured at the Samarpan festival. I've been fortunate to work with this photographer for many years, and his artistic eye always captures the nuance and finesse of the performance.
A New Year's photoshoot against a stunning natural backdrop. This image, invoking Lord Shiva, is about setting new goals and dreaming new dreams for the year ahead.
A dynamic leap from a performance at the Nritya Upahaar Festival. The energy of a live performance is something truly special, and I'm grateful for every opportunity to be on stage.
An expressive moment from a performance at the Nirantaram Festival. It was a joy to present pieces from my production *SARVASYA* on the auspicious occasion of Vaikuntha Ekadashi.
About this collection
Every performance you see here is the result of hours spent coordinating with live musicians to get the Raga and Tala structures exactly right. When I step onto a stage at a festival like Nirantaram, the energy shifts based on the space, the acoustics, and the audience response, making each rendition of a piece like Sarvasya distinct from the last.
The photos in this cluster serve as a documentation of that live energy. When you commission a performance, you are not just getting a solo routine; you are getting a process that begins with literary research into rare texts and moves through original music composition.
My approach to these performances is rooted in the idea that dance should feel alive and relevant today. Whether I am exploring gender through Marathi abhangs or presenting Buddhist nun narratives, I coordinate closely with live orchestras to ensure the dynamics of the music support the movement. This requires a level of technical preparation that goes beyond choreography; it involves briefing musicians on silence requirements, intensity, and the emotional arc of the piece.
If you are interested in booking a performance, understand that my work is rarely 'off the shelf.' I typically require time to align the thematic content with the requirements of your specific venue or festival. If you see a piece here that resonates with your vision, we can discuss how to adapt that repertoire for your stage.
Divya Ravi
I’m Divya. For me, dance is a way of life—a constant search into old poetry and stories that have been lost over time. When I’m on stage, I don't just perform steps; I try to bridge the gap between ancient texts and the people sitting in the audience.
