An ongoing performance series exploring rare female voices from history. We translate the words of poets like Andal, Akka Mahadevi, and Amrapali into movement that feels ancient, urgent, and deeply personal.

About this collection

Bringing these stories to the stage requires more than just choreography; it demands a deep dive into ancient Pāli, Marathi, and Tamil texts. When I develop a piece for this series, I collaborate closely with my musicians to ensure the raga and rhythm do not just accompany the movement, but actively shape the emotional narrative of the poet’s original words.

Akhyāt – Ākhyānā began as a personal search for stories in texts that have been ignored for centuries. The process is never purely aesthetic; it is an academic and emotional project. Whether it is Savitribai Phule's poetry or the existential inquiries of Buddhist nuns, the goal is to make these narratives breathe again through the grammar of Bharatanatyam.

My Approach to Thematic Work

Each performance under this series is a custom-built production. I believe that choreography should be a dialogue between the dancer and the text. This involves:

  • Literary Research: I work with scholars to decode the philosophical nuances of texts in their original languages—Pāli, Marathi, or Tamil.
  • Collaborative Composition: Music is not pre-recorded or generic. I work with my long-term musical collaborators to structure the raga and tala, ensuring the soundscape reflects the emotional arc of the poetry.
  • Theatricality: We focus on lighting, spatial formation, and minimalist props to create an immersive environment rather than a standard stage presentation.

Commissioning a Piece

I accept commissions for both short, 10-15 minute solo pieces and full-length, 45-60 minute productions. For ensemble works, I lead residency-style rehearsals to ensure the group movement is cleaned and synchronized. If you are looking to curate a program that moves beyond traditional margam structures and brings forgotten female voices to the forefront, we should talk about the scope and theme of your event.

I view my dance practice as a dialogue between history and the present. I don't just perform; I search for stories in texts that have been ignored for centuries and try to make them breathe again through movement. Every production here is a result of deep, long-term collaboration with the musicians I work with.
