Large Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation in Bangalore
Helping cattle, horses, and calves who suffer from road accidents and neglect. We provide on-spot emergency trauma care and long-term sanctuary for those who have no one else.
This is Manohar, a young calf and the survivor of a road accident. He was left on the roadside, unable to move, after a hit-and-run incident.
He has a severe injury on his right hind leg. To treat him, we use a specialized lift to support his weight, allowing our vets to safely examine and treat him without causing more pain.
Manohar is now at our centre undergoing treatment. The yellow markings are from antiseptic application on his wounds as he begins his recovery.
A before and after comparison showing Manohar when he first arrived, unable to stand, and now, beginning to put weight on his legs again. We hope for his speedy recovery.
This video shows a joint effort with SARWA to provide on-the-spot emergency care for a cow in distress. Collaboration is key to helping animals in peripheral areas of the city.
This is Asha Kutti, seen here recovering as a calf at our large animal shelter. Many of our large animal rescues grow up with us, safe from the dangers of the street.
This is Bheema, who came to us as a struggling newborn calf just a few days old. He is now thriving under our care.
About this collection
When a large animal like a cow or horse is down, simple transport is not enough. We operate a specialized hydraulic ambulance designed for these heavy-lift rescues, allowing us to safely lift animals weighing over 300kg without causing further injury. It is a complex, delicate process that ensures we can move them from the roadside to our rehabilitation center as quickly and painlessly as possible.
Our work with large animals in Bangalore goes beyond simple rescue. Often, we are called to handle severe trauma—animals struck by vehicles on the outskirts of the city or those suffering from chronic neglect.
Our Rescue Process
When you report a case, our team evaluates the situation to determine if the animal can be treated on-spot or needs to be moved to our Large Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre (LARRC). For animals that cannot stand (downer animals), we use hydraulic lift systems to prevent further stress or damage to their limbs. Once at our center, the care becomes intensive.
Specialized Medical Care
Many of the cattle we rescue suffer from ingesting plastic waste, a common issue for strays in urban areas. Our vets regularly perform rumenotomies to remove kilograms of plastic waste that prevents proper digestion. Beyond surgery, we focus on pain management using Class IV Laser Therapy to help with nerve regeneration and wound healing.
A Permanent Home
For many of our rescues, returning to the streets is not an option. They require long-term care, specialized diets, and a safe environment to graze and move freely. Our sanctuary provides a permanent home for these animals, giving them a life free from the dangers of traffic and hunger. If you spot a large animal in distress, reach out immediately. Time is often the biggest factor in our ability to save them.
