Structural Innovation and Cantilevered Architecture

We design buildings that defy gravity, utilizing dramatic structural forms to create unique, uplifting spatial experiences that reshape how you interact with your home.

The Long House under construction, showcasing the impressive 23-foot cantilevered volume. This image reveals the raw structural ambition before the application of finishing materials.

The Quarry House features an 18-foot cantilevered volume, creating a powerful statement of modern design. This floating mass houses private spaces while sheltering the outdoor areas below.

The Timber Edge facade is a composition of projecting and receding volumes, including a prominent cantilevered balcony. This structural play adds depth and dynamism to the building's exterior.

This video demonstrates the floating staircase at our Timber Edge project. The design creates an experience of lightness and movement, turning a simple transition into an architectural moment.

About this collection

When we project a volume 23 feet into space, as seen in our Long House project, we are balancing heavy concrete loads against precise steel calculations to ensure that the final form feels weightless. A cantilever is a rigorous exercise in engineering where the success of the visual statement depends entirely on the accuracy of the structural support hidden within the building fabric.

At Crest Architects, we approach structural innovation as a dialogue between engineering and aesthetic intent. A cantilever is only as successful as the structural integrity beneath it. We collaborate with specialized consultants to realize gravity-defying forms, ensuring that dramatic overhangs—like the 23-foot span at our Long House or the 18-foot projection at The Quarry House—are achieved with precision.

This rigor extends to the interior experience. Our floating staircases, suspended from reinforced concrete walls, are designed to introduce lightness into the domestic environment. By separating the staircase from the floor plate, we create visual breathing room, allowing light to permeate the core of the residence. We utilize raw materials like exposed concrete and steel to articulate these forms, ensuring the structure remains legible and honest.

For homeowners interested in bold architectural forms, the process begins with feasibility. We assess the site’s capacity to support structural extensions, factoring in load-bearing requirements, soil stability, and local climatic conditions. Whether transforming an existing roof into a modern cantilevered terrace or constructing a new residence from the ground up, our objective is to maximize spatial dynamism without compromising the structural logic of the building.
