Welcoming our new Foundation batch. This video captures the excitement as a diverse group of artists begins their intensive journey into ceramics. We cannot wait to see the magic they create over the next few months.

A key part of our Foundation Program is learning to work on a larger scale. Here, students are mastering the art of building with big coils, a technique that requires teamwork, patience, and an understanding of the clay's drying process.

About this collection

This isn't just a technical course. By the end of this 4.5-month term, you will have developed a complete body of work to display and sell at our 'Arangetram' exhibition, giving you real-world exposure to the ceramics market and a chance to see how your pieces hold up in a gallery setting.

What You Will Learn

Our foundation program is designed to take you from a curious beginner to a confident maker. We focus on the 'hunar' (skill) required to master the medium, providing a balance of instructor-led demonstrations and dedicated practice time.

The Curriculum:

  • Wheel Throwing: You will start with the basics of centering and pull cylinders, eventually moving to complex forms like teapots, mugs, and bowls with lids.
  • Hand-Building: Learn techniques like coiling and slab construction to build sculptures and functional objects that aren't possible on a wheel.
  • Glaze Chemistry: We move beyond pre-made glazes. You will learn the science behind glazing, allowing you to formulate your own surfaces and achieve the finish you envision.
  • Surface Decoration: Master intricate techniques like sgraffito and slip trailing to add a personal narrative to your work.

The Arangetram Milestone

Every artist needs a moment to shine. The program culminates in our 'Arangetram', an exhibition where you get to display, price, and sell the pieces you have created over the last few months. This is where you learn the business side of art—curation, display, and how to talk about your work to potential buyers.

Why Our Approach Works

We believe in mentorship, not just instruction. You will have access to open practice hours and critique sessions with our faculty. This is a space where you can experiment, make mistakes, and learn from them. Whether you are pivoting to a career in ceramics or just want a serious creative outlet, this program provides the structure you need to truly understand the life cycle of a clay object, from wet mud to fired ceramic.
