Wildlife Rescue and Advocacy in Bengaluru
We go beyond street dogs to protect urban wildlife, fighting illegal trade and rehabilitating displaced animals in collaboration with local authorities.
This text post details a case where we assisted the Customs Department in stabilizing 2500 turtles that were seized in Bangalore after being smuggled from Singapore. This is the shocking scale of the illegal wildlife trade.
About this collection
We recently assisted the Customs Department in stabilizing 2500 turtles seized at the airport, packed into containers after being smuggled from Singapore. It is a stark reminder that behind every exotic pet trade is a long, cruel journey. We act as the emergency medical bridge for wildlife seized by authorities, ensuring they are stabilized, treated for dehydration and trauma, and prepared for either rehabilitation or deportation back to their natural habitats.
Wildlife rescue is not just about nursing an injured crow back to health. It is a battle against the systemic cruelty of the illegal pet trade. In Bengaluru, we occupy a unique position. Because we operate a dedicated trauma center, we are the go-to team for the Forest Department and Customs officials when they seize illegally trafficked wildlife at Kempegowda International Airport.
The Reality of Exotic Trafficking
The demand for exotic pets drives the smuggling of birds, reptiles, and small mammals into the city. These animals often arrive in absolute shock, suffering from overcrowding, starvation, and severe neglect. Our team does not just treat the injury; we have to manage the extreme stress these wild animals face. We handle species that are not adapted to city living, requiring specific containment protocols to prevent self-mutilation and further trauma.
Why We Advocate
We do not just patch these animals up; we speak up against the trade itself. We work on campaigns to bust the myths that owning an iguana or a rare bird is a status symbol. Keeping a wild animal is often illegal, but more importantly, it is cruel. These animals have complex dietary and environmental needs that a household cannot replicate. We believe in co-existence, not ownership.
What to Do
If you encounter injured urban wildlife—a kite, a snake, or a native animal—please do not try to handle it yourself. Wild animals are prone to stress-induced cardiac arrest when handled by humans. Observe from a distance, secure the area if possible to keep people away, and call us. We will guide you or dispatch our ambulance team to coordinate the rescue.
Charlie's Animal Rescue Centre
We are CARE. We started with a mission to help street animals, but the reality of Bangalore’s urban wildlife crisis pulled us into the fight against trafficking and habitat loss. We work with authorities to protect the voiceless, whether they are Indies on the street or exotic species trapped in crates.
