Ruko (Hold)... thoda time lagega (it will take some time). In our studio, we use props like ropes, chairs, and bricks to safely guide your body into alignment, making deep postures accessible for everyone.

Using the wall and ropes for support in inversions helps build confidence and correct alignment. This practice, known as yoga kurunta or rope work, is excellent for spinal traction and improving circulation.

Here you can see how we use the rope wall to decompress the spine and open the shoulders. This supported inversion allows for a longer, more restorative hold than a freestanding pose.

A chair and ropes can transform your practice. Here we are using them to support a deep backbend, allowing the student to focus on opening the chest and shoulders without straining the lower back.

This is a great example of using props for therapeutic backbends. The chair supports the spine, allowing for a gentle yet deep opening of the thoracic region, which is great for posture and relieving tension.

We get creative with props to make advanced poses more accessible. Here, a student works on a supported backbend using a chair, blocks, and a yoga wheel to gradually increase flexibility and strength.

A glimpse into our sunrise meditation and prop work. Using a chair for support during relaxation helps maintain spinal alignment and allows for a deeper state of rest after an active practice.

Backbends can be intimidating, but with the right support, they become joyful and freeing. Here, students use chairs to explore different variations of backbends, building strength and trust in their bodies.

We have fun while working on our spine health. These chair-supported backbends help to open up the heart and shoulders, releasing tension that builds up from daily life.

A chair can be a fantastic tool for forward folds, helping to release the hamstrings and lower back. This supported variation ensures a safe and effective stretch.

This is a glimpse into our chair yoga class, where we explore a variety of poses with support. It is a wonderful option for anyone looking for a gentle yet effective practice.

About Iyengar Yoga: Alignment with Props

Using a chair or a rope isn't about taking the easy way out; it’s about creating the right space for your body to open. When you use props, you aren't just 'doing' the pose, you're learning how your spine, shoulders, and hips move in relation to each other. It’s the difference between forcing a shape and finding a release.
