Authentic Judo Training: Master Balance and Throws
Judo is the gentle way to forge unbreakable strength. At our Sector 38 academy, we master the art of leverage, turning an opponent's force into your victory.
Demonstrating the Ura Nage, a powerful rear throw. This technique is a counter-throw, used when an opponent is aggressively pushing forward, allowing you to lift and drop them behind you.
Here I am breaking down the Harai Goshi, or sweeping hip throw. This dynamic move involves using a sweeping leg motion combined with a hip throw to take an opponent off their feet, a staple in both Judo and MMA.
A demonstration of the Tobi-juji-gatame, or flying armbar. This is an advanced and spectacular move where you jump into an armbar from a standing position, requiring perfect timing and commitment.
A student executes a powerful Uchi-mata, or inner thigh throw, during a No-Gi sparring session. This shows how classic Judo throws can be adapted for MMA and grappling without the traditional uniform.
Executing a Kosoto Gari, a minor outer reaping throw, during randori (Judo sparring). This foot sweep is all about timing, targeting the opponent's ankle as they shift their weight to break their balance.
A young student practices the Tani Otoshi, or valley drop. This is a sacrifice throw where you fall backward to pull your opponent down, an effective counter-move that we teach in our kids' judo classes.
Another look at the Uchi Mata throw in action. Notice how the thrower uses their leg to lift the opponent's thigh from the inside, creating powerful momentum for the takedown.
Two students practicing grip fighting and movement in a Judo Gi. Mastering the grip is the first step to controlling the fight and setting up your throws.
An O-uchi-gari, or major inner reaping throw, being executed during live sparring. This move targets the opponent's inner leg to sweep them off their feet, a fundamental technique in our curriculum.
A student successfully lands a drop Seoi Nage. This variation of the shoulder throw involves dropping to one or both knees to get under the opponent's center of gravity, making it effective against taller opponents.
About Judo: The Gentle Way (Gi Training)
Judo is not about brute force, it is about efficiency. Here, we train in the traditional Gi, focusing on Kuzushi (off-balancing) and perfecting your Ukemi (break-falls) before moving to dynamic throws like Uchi-mata and Seoi-nage. Whether you are here to learn self-defense or compete, you will be sparring under experienced supervision, ensuring your technique is crisp and your safety is absolute.
Judo, or the gentle way, is a constant lesson in physics and discipline. At our Sector 38 dojo, we do not just teach you how to throw; we teach you how to read your opponent’s weight distribution. You start with the fundamentals: grip fighting, balance, and the essential Ukemi to keep you safe when you hit the mat.
Our curriculum bridges traditional Judo with modern grappling needs. We run 6 PM daily sessions where you will drill Nage-waza (standing techniques) and Ne-waza (groundwork). You are not just memorizing moves; you are learning to chain them. If your O-uchi-gari fails, you immediately flow into a Ko-soto-gari or transition to ground control. We keep the intensity high but the instruction precise.
Because we operate in a 1500 sq ft facility with industrial-grade EVA foam mats, you get a realistic training environment without the fluff. We keep the focus on Randori (live sparring) because that is where you truly learn. It is hard work. You will sweat, you will be thrown, and you will get back up. That is the point. Whether you are aiming for a competition team or just want to master the art of leverage, we provide the consistent, disciplined coaching to get you there. Come ready to work; the mat does not care about your excuses.
