The Gurus: Authentic Lucknow Gharana Kathak
Witness the essence of Kathak through our lineage. Here, dance is not just a performance; it is a conversation between history, rhythm, and the soul.
'Ghungroo ki Dhwani: Manch se Mann tak.' Pt. Jai Kishan Maharaj demonstrating how the sound of the ghungroo (ankle bells) travels from the stage to the heart, a core philosophy of our art.
A close-up of 'Thaat' by Gurumaa Smt. Ruby Mishra. The 'thaat' is the opening stance in a Kathak performance, establishing a connection with the rhythm and the audience with subtle, graceful movements.
A classic performance photograph of the legendary Pt. Birju Maharaj, our Guru and the guiding light of our parampara. His legacy is the foundation of everything we do.
A vintage photograph of a young Pt. Birju Maharaj. We honor our Gurus by preserving and propagating the pure art form that they passed down to us.

A display of the different 'ang' (aspects) of Kathak by a senior disciple. This performance showcases the blend of grace and power that defines our style.
A solo abhinaya piece where the dancer becomes the character. Our training emphasizes that the most impactful expression is natural and subtle, coming from within.
Pt. Jai Kishan Maharaj playfully demonstrating a 'tihaai' (a rhythmic pattern repeated three times) based on the number five, showing the creative and improvisational aspects of Kathak.
A 'Ginti ki tihai' (a tihai based on counting) by Guruji. This showcases the intellectual and mathematical depth of Kathak, where complex calculations are executed flawlessly through dance.
About The Gurus: Lineage & Mastery
Our 'baithaki' performances are an intimate dialogue between the dancer and the musicians, stripped of all commercial artifice. We rely entirely on live tabla and sarangi, allowing the rhythm to breathe and evolve with every expression. If you choose this format, you are not booking a standard dance show; you are hosting a living, spontaneous conversation where the dancer and the musician create the narrative together in real time.
The Legacy of Lucknow Gharana
For us, Kathak is not a skill to be acquired but a 'sadhana' to be lived. As direct descendants of the Kalka-Bindadin gharana, we view every performance as an opportunity to pass on the purity of our training. We do not believe in shortcuts, flashy backing tracks, or commercialized choreography. When you invite us to perform, you are inviting the authentic, traditional rigour of the Lucknow style.
Why Live Baithak Matters
Unlike modern stage shows, a 'baithak' performance is unpredictable and deeply connected to the audience. We use 'Padhant' (recitation) to explain the rhythmic structure before we dance it, breaking the barrier between the artist and the viewer. This format requires silence, focus, and a space where the nuance of an eyebrow movement or the intricate sound of ghungroos can be fully appreciated.
Our Role as Your Hosts
We curate these sessions personally. Whether it is an intimate gathering or a classical music appreciation evening, we manage the artistic direction to ensure the integrity of the performance is maintained.
- Originality: We do not perform generic sets. Every piece is composed based on the energy of the room and the audience.
- Live Orchestra: We work only with professional classical musicians who understand the improvisational nature of our dance.
- Cultural Context: We explain the meaning of the Thumri or Ghazal before interpreting it through dance, making the experience educational and engaging.
